Would you ever install an island hood in a space for a wall hood?
Comments (9)Unfortunately, the cabinets are in the factory already and couldn't be changed - we checked today. The Modernaires, look wonderful. I asked about one in the photo gallery but they said it was too expensive for them to make. So why taunt us with it? :) However, DH found a Zephyr that I had missed and it is deeper than the Imperials. It is http://zephyronline.com/products/cheng/okeanito_wall I'm still checking out its feature's and functionality and hoping that I can work in a little discount from the appliance store since this plus the range top and other misc appliances will add up. I also wonder if there are any look alikes that are less expensive since this one blows my hood budget out the window (pardon the pun) However, it is a key design feature of the kitchen so I do think it is worth it. And 48" is the largest it goes so I don't feel that bad about the cabinets not being able to make room for 54". Thank you for your help! Those Modernaires do look lovely By the way, NYC, did you put lighting inside of your glass cabinets? I like the idea but decided not to because it will be a while before I accumulate a showcase of teapots there. Did you put undermount lighting under all of your cabinets? I'm wondering if I'll really need it under everything but then it might look dumb if I only have it on the inner part of my L Txs...See MoreWhy would you ever plant rye? ... Comments (10)I also don't understand how it is said that TTTF requires as much water as KBG because TTTF has like 3X the depth of drought resistant roots. There's a lot of this information that just gets repeated over and over until it becomes truth. But what's missing is the context. Where are you located? A TTTF fescue in NC is going to burn up quickly in full sun with no irrigation, but it may stay green without any irrigation in NY. As a matter of fact, you probably won't make it past early May in NC. Lawn care practices also make a huge difference. Root depth is directly proportional to top growth, the longer you let it grow, the deeper the roots. My neighbor, who only cuts her lawn about once every 30 days, has some fescue that can go through any heat wave without any water, but the grass is always a tangled mess. If you cut weekly to 4", you can only expect 6"-8" root depth. So while TTTF has the ability to go up to 3 feet deep, in your average well maintained lawn it will only go about as deep as KBG. Therefor, it will need just about as much water....See MoreWould you ever consider...
Comments (46)I like ledges, too. I like them deep enough that I can place an IKEA Variera box, that my husband drilled holes in the bottom of, to tidily keep a large Dr. Bronner's, Every Man Jack, Naturoli Shampoo, and 2 razors. Ledges are also handy for keeping an extra hand towel, to wipe down the shower and fixtures (we have hard water). I also use them for shaving. I could probably use a niche for shaving, too, lol, but I might not be as graceful.......See MoreWould you ever start a big construction job with just one estimate?
Comments (25)I like the points about relationship and trust, and "better to pay more for the right person than less for the wrong guy". I feel sure I will not make any friends right here, but I question how multiple bids have anything to do with the above statement. In fact, it seems constructed of several false assumptions. Many people have some rationalization that is completely reasonable for deciding not to competitive bid their project, but do those reasons stand up to scrutiny? The answer is that most simply do not. Here is the only reasonable question to ask yourself when considering whether or not to competitive bid a project: "will the value added from competitive bidding exceed the cost?" I don't know the answer to that question for you as I don't have a real picture of the cost, but I can tell you with something that approaches certainty, there is value in competitive bidding. We understand much of that value. For example, we know that projects that are competitive bid are more likely to finish on time, they are less likely to have cost overruns and are of higher quality. What I personally don't understand is why this is even in question. Seriously, competition drives performance...if that is news to you, then welcome to earth, and what else would you like to know about the human condition? We keep score for a reason. Just two days ago, San Francisco lost the Superbowl, do you honestly believe they would have played just as hard if there wasn't a scoreboard? The guy who finishes the race in third place still ran harder than he would have if he were running alone. It isn't about the cheapest, it is about better. ---- There is no doubt that there is comparative value in multiple competitive bids, it is also likely to yield a flat increase in the quality of information, however, there is a cost. That cost might be monetary or non-monetary and it is completely reasonable to decide that the additional information and quality is unlikely to be worth the additional cost and just go with one bid for that reason....See Morelocaleater
