Are you quilting this weekend? Feb.21-23
Comments (16)My weekend ended up starting on Friday, inadvertently. Thursday afternoon, evening and night, we had a fairly substantial heavy, wet snowfall, about 10-12", along with driving 30 mpr winds. Then the temp started to fall and it was a mess. We live in an area where we have old overhead power lines and tons of mature trees, so we always have power outages - so many, in fact, that we just installed a new natural gas powered generator that automatically starts up when the electricity goes off. Thursday evening the power went off about 8:00 or so, and our new generator kicked in. I noticed that it sounded like it was running a little unevenly, but at least I had light, heat and flushing toilets. I was quilting away when I heard beeping and a woman's voice. "Warning. Carbon Monoxide." I went down the basement and I could smell exhaust, probably from the generator (which is outside). I immediately called the gas company and my husband who is in Colorado. I opened doors and windows and the snow was being driven into the house. Mike called a friend of ours who began digging out of his driveway so he could come and help me. I bundled up and went to sit and wait out in our solarium which is unheated and separated by a door from the rest of our house. The generator meantime had stopped working (good thing, because I didn't know how to shut it off.) The gas company and our friend Ron got there in about an hour and confirmed that it was the generator and made sure it wouldn't go back on, and I spent a dark, chilly, flushless, and mostly sleepless night. I was mostly bummed that my quilting weekend was turning into a bust. I couldn't get to work because of the 18" snowdrifts in the driveway. But miracle of miracles, the power was restored by 8:30 Friday morning, and the cause of the malfunctioning generator was found to be snow and ice driven into the filter, which caused excessive CO to be present in the exhaust. We do have to do find the leaks into the house and spray insulating foam into them though. I'm certainly glad I was awake when the power went off. I don't know if I would have heard the downstairs CO alarm if I was asleep. The one outside my bedroom needed new batteries, and we hadn't installed them. Lesson learned. Oh, and you're supposed to replace CO detectors every five years so the gas company tech told me. I'm feeling pretty damn lucky, and I've been quilting up a storm. I've gotten the top to Peekaboo Monkeys almost done, I made the PP lotto block and the weekend's just beginning. Yahoo!...See MoreAre you quilting this weekend? Feb. 1-3
Comments (28)Just back from the quilt show... what a blast. I talked with several people and saw some amazing work. I sat down at the Bernina booth and test drove a 10,000 dollar machine... I don't know why I torture myself so! I wanted to take pictures, but I didn't know if it was allowed... I went to the strawberry festival one time and took picture of a candle that looked and smelled like a pie and the lady who was selling them almost had me sent to the electric chair, so I didn't want to repeat the experience. There were some applique patterns and mini-quilts that I liked... also a magnetic seam guide for the machine, but I didn't buy ANYTHING because I really am saving for a new machine... I shocked myself when I walked out empty handed, and it took a lot of self control! Came very close to buying rotary blades, but the prices are better at Wal-mart than they were at that booth... Donna, it was very nice to finally meet you face to face! Your quilts were beautiful and I don't know how you got such small pieces of fabric through the machine on those microscopic half square tirangles. Lois, I too have said a few curse words when quilting... when that happens I remind myself that it is supposed to be fun and take a break. I rather enjoy paper piecing, but have to make the same pattern about 3 times to get the hang of it... I usually flip to the wrong side and cut the part I'm supposed to flip... not good! Hope things get better for you. The Birds of Paridise is beautiful! I'm looking for a paper pieced pug design for a gift for an aunt that loves pugs, so if anyone knows where I can ifnd one, please let me know. I found one that was 5 dollars, but there were no instructions on how to pay for it or download it......See MoreWeekend quilting plans? Jan 30-Feb 1
Comments (19)Thank you Donna, Bev & Lois. My birthday was actually earlier this month, but Friday was the first day all of us girls could get together when there was good weather.... we have had excessive rain this month. Lois you can get dimmer cords that have a slide button on one end and a double sided plug on the other end and you plug your lamp cord plug in to the back side of the double sided dimmer cord plug and the dimmer cord plug is what actually plugs in to the wall.... you should be able to get them at Walmart or maybe Lowes? We have had ours for many years so can't remember exactly where we got them from.? Well we went visiting Saturday afternoon and this afternoon I helped my son finish sorting and purging out old toys, .... so only had a little time this afternoon to finish hand-piecing a Granny Square Quilt block.... fixing to start on another one in a little bit. Best to you all, Sandra...See MoreAre you quilting this weekend? Jan. 29-Feb. 1, 2016
Comments (16)Very pretty quilt, Vasu. I'm not quilting this weekend. I have not quilted nearly as much as I expected to this month. I've been golfing and I was recently introduced to Mahjong. That is a game that can really become an obsession. Tomorrow we are playing in a golf tournament for folks here at our condo complex. I'm having way too much fun in the sun, I'm afraid. We went whale watching on a sailboat today. I've got to get down to some serious quilting....See More- 4 years ago
