Kristine, I thought yours got off to a much earlier start.

Typically 3rd week May - an unknown rugosa from Sam Kedem that was supposed to be Dart’s Dash - a good 2 to 3 weeks before most of the others. At the other end: Pink Flower Carpet is always a straggler.

Flowers, they could have been earlier . I was going by the date that I took a picture. It could have been a week earlier because I did have blooms at Easter.

I’m interested to find out here!! My house is positioned that we are in shade now . I was advised that everyone prunes their roses and strips the leaves in Jan .. so I did that . Then I hear not everyone does that ?!!! Lol so Now I have lots of sticks . My guess is March ? People have lots of blooms here now though.

2019 was a rough year for my roses, they didn't start blooming until June 25th. But I transplanted them and while they were still in their pots, but just starting to leaf out, they got hit with a late blizzard. So I am looking forward to earlier blooms this year since they are planted and established.

Tell me about it Sara.. I keep looking at all the new leaves pushing out wishing I’d see a bud, but I’m a few months off. Historically, I pruned mid-January because that is what the locals recommend to me, but this year I was out stripping & clipping Dec. 21. I thought I’d see if I could get blooms sooner, and it doesn’t make sense waiting so long since it almost never freezes here. I didn’t strip/clip Sunflare because I’m replacing it, but she’s currently blooming. According to my phone, April 19th last year with Rosie the Riveter, followed by Old Wollerton Hall a few days later.

Spring won't be here for another few months but my general rule is planting in late may. It looks like this winter is milder so I am hoping to have a climbing teasing georgia again. Teasing Georgia seems to be a bit more cane hardy than most of my roses in milder winter.

What a great topic, Sara Ann! I wish I had taken many pictures on January 1st of each year. You’ve inspired me to set a notification on my phone for a couple of dates each year, so I’ll have a record of what roses are blooming at that particular date. I’ll join in, but I’m in a rather “cheaters zone”. A few of mine were pruned prior to January 1st, so they were prevented from blooming.

I have Monsieur Tillier with a second flush this 2020. The first flush was just 2 blooms since I cut him back in November, since he got top heavy in our Santa Ana winds and had blown sideways. Once his main canes stiffen he will be wind resistant in his rather sheltered spot. I am trying to shape his final form now while I can. The one at Huntington is 8 feet tall with a small trunk like a tree and they don’t cut him back that I have ever noticed, since he is a Tea Rose and they don’t like pruning. He was planted as a very small band 15 months ago and is now 4 feet tall after pruning. I also have Marie Pavie, Marie Daly, and Perle d’Or in bloom today.

One week ago ;) But then I haven't gotten around to winter pruning yet.

I found a bud today on orchid masterpiece, the fairy and a baby MAC I planted a month ago :). I was jumping up and down. The temperature has been unusually warm this week and those will probably just freeze in one of our unexpected freezes. I think last year my first rose to really bloom was Darcey Bussell and Angel face around April 15. If the weather stays this warm I may get blooms sooner this year.

I don't get my first bloom until Memorial Day weekend usually. I never know what will open first. It varies every year but it's always one of the potted roses. They get a bit of a head start because the patio is warmer than the beds are.

Lilyfinch, I pruned mine on 1/23.. so I guess I’m one of the ones who do that.

i have a bud just opening up on my Lavender Veranda, will post if it looks good, but in terms of the pruned roses, it depends on sun and rain. I’ll play it safe and say April 10 for those,

Huntington Gardens prunes and defoliates all their Hybrid Teas in January/February. I pruned my Hybrid Teas a few weeks ago. I didn’t bother with defoliating though. If they get disease due to “overwintering” on foliage then I will just replace with something that doesn’t get diseased. We barely get winter. Just less sun and cooler days. I also pruned Madame Alfred Carriere, a Noisette climber, since she gets pruned year round to keep her in bounds. She is my only rose older than 15 months. She has been in her spot 3 years and almost always has a few blooms year round even with my year round trimming of the long side arm canes she constantly throws.

Normally dont get blooms here until late March, I am 2 hours from Houston. But I spotted a cluster of 3 little blooms on Arctic Blue which was just a tiny band last year. Souvenir de la Malmaison has a young fat bud that, unless we get a freeze, should open in a week or two. Cubana [a wonderful apricot shrub rose, very prolific and healthy - this rose should get more good press!] has several small ones. Surprised to get any buds this early even with our mild winter. Winter always gives us one more good freeze just because it can.

I checked my picture and it was June 23rd last year! The peonies started blooming mid June ! (insert crying emoji). Hopefully if we could have a decent spring this year, which we did not have for the past few years, we could hope for early June.. We have a long way to go...

Mine bloom all year around. They are more sparse in very cold weather and extreme hot rainy weather, like in August but they will still bloom spoadically during those times. I get my biggest fushes in April and May. Then in fall when the nights start cooling off a little, then more big flushes.

Same as Sultry for me. I think mine bloom better in the winter than in the middle of summer. The blooms that I have right now seem bigger and fuller than in the heat. We had such a hot fall that they weren't very nice then either. I lost a few to the heat.

What to do with the dormant waterlily tubs...I throw passiflora cuttings in there until I am ready to root them. I've left them in there all winter and they stay fresh..sometimes they root in the waterlily tubs lol.

Ummm how long can you leave Bare Root body bags soaking? I'm pretty sure these two poor things have been in there for a month or more Lol! Blue Girl has a bud. I'm a bad bad rose mommy.

Not to worry, sultry, I've left roses soaking more than a month and they did just fine when I planted them!

Thanks Seil. I feel better now lol. Ive been sick and still getting over a cough. Any digging makes me cough even more. I am alot better than a few days ago so I should be able to plant all my bare roots in another day or two. I feel so guilty lol.

Seil, thanks for the soaking advice. My two Love Songs arrived today from Edmunds. I have to say they were very well packed in damp moss, and the roots were plentiful and healthy-looking. I can’t plant them until Thursday, but they are In plastic tubs soaking away.
