growing tomatoes to make sauce....need suggestions
Comments (9)You should visit the GW Harvest forum for their input. You can make sauce out of any tomato, but generally a DET type will crop all its fruits in a short period of time, It's convenient because they give you a large crop all at once. Beyond that, you might choose meatier types of tomatoes that have less seeds and gel. There a LOT to choose from. On LI, we're a zone 7 climate, and because we're coastal our gardens are effected by humidity, particularly in August when it seems like the onshore breezes seem to wane in the evenings--mildew and airborne pathogens take hold of the garden. A DET with a shorter DTM, if timed right, will do its bulk of cropping by early August, and with that you're going to escape the bulk of problems that typically set into the gardens by the third or fourth week of August. Comments (5)I prepare 3 meals a day, 7 days a week. We may eat out for one lunch, but it is rare. So, I'll take shortcuts any day when the quality isn't compromised! Trader Joe's has been the best thing that's happened to our food budget, quality of premade foods, and our health. I've lost 6.5 lbs since I started eating 100% TJ's food and beverages on January 9th! It took so long for our town to get one recently, and now it has made a big difference. Comments (58)Hey PK! Glad to hear from you. I make a sweet and sour sauce very close to what PK makes. I use it for sweet and sour pork but it would be great on meatballs now that I see Pete's recipe. 1/2 cup salad oil 1 clove garlic 2 green peppers, quartered 1 1/2 to 2 lbs pork tenderloin, cubed 2 eggs 3 TBSP flour 1 tsp salt pinch pepper 1 cup chicken broth 1 can pineapple chunks, drained 1 TBSP corn starch 3 tsp soya sauce 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup white vinegar 1 TBSP molasses Parboil peppers for 5 minutes. Saute garlic in oil. In separate bowl, beat flour, eggs and seasonings. Dip the pork in the mixture and brown in the oil. Pour off excess oil add broth, pineapple and peppers. Cover and simmer 20 minutes. Blend remaining ingredients. Add to pork. Stir until thick. For meatballs forget the pork, flour and eggs. Dice rather than quarter the peppers so I would forget the parboil part. Continue from the broth part on. I've talked myself into trying this I think it would be yummy! Maybe it's too much but I'd go for a Sweet and Sour, a Marinara, a BBQ and a Swedish style, actually a Mexican sauce could be could too. That's it !! Have a meatball station! Comments (13)Alexa, how old is the crockpot? The newer ones ron hotter than the ones from the 90's. If they are frozen, dump it all together at about 1 pm, set the cooker to high if it is an older one, or on low if a newer one. If they are not done, you can always turn the cooker up to high or transfer to a casserole dish and nuke them. I have done this too for other functions and it works. I will not disown you.
