What size light can go over a kitchen island?

Is there a rule of thumb on the size of a hanging light over a kitchen island? My island is 30" x 36" and I want to add a light over it and not sure how big/small I should go.

That's a tiny island, so I wouldn't go overkill with it. There are some cute branch-like fixtures with multiple bulbs that have been popular in years recently that might provide a more airy and lighter look for you, but a lot of it depends on what your personal tastes are and the styling of the entire area as to what to choose.

For a kitchen island of that size, you may be able to squeeze two small 10" dia pendant lights with 5 inches of space in between the fixtures plus 5 inches of space at each side of the edge. With that set up, we would recommend the following fixtures from our sister brand Luxe Light and Home:

Just my opinion on the shade size: Just from a "looks" standpoint, I think the cord or rod length should be at least one-and-a-half (twice or more is even better) times the height of the shade. Otherwise, the pendant might look shade heavy. If your ceiling is high enough this is probably not a problem.

Lanterns would be too bulky and oversized with a 96” ceiling. Smaller, clear pendants can provide accent lighting. But you will still need recessed to provide the bulk of your ambient and task lighting.

You need pendants with chain. and EXTRA chain and wire. Or the fixture must come with a pivot and the ability for additional stem or customization on the light order.. . It would help to know the highest ceiling elevation. A 126 inch island is not HUGE. You need nothing close to an 82 inch single fixture. It will take OVER : ) Three pendants, forcing light down onto the counter would be just fine. No wider than 15 inches if three and no more than 18 to 20 if two. . You can augment with recessed as well.

We would recommend the fixture to be 36" from the top of the island. Nothing big, as it isn't too large of an island. Have a look at our flush mounts below. We make custom lighting, so the pendant design, size, and canopy size and overall fixtures can all be customized.
