which Helianthus?
Comments (9)I have Heliopsis *summer Sun* the leaves look similar too the ones in your photo, but mine are closer together and the flower head isn't that far above the foliage. The flower on mine is double pedal, 3-4 times more pedals than the one you showed. Mine also gets 4-5 ft tall but has been blooming for over a month and will continue to do so until I cut it down in the fall. . . I hope yours gets id, Id love to know what it is and if I can grow it, I like the flower. Good luck....See Moreheliopsis or helianthus
Comments (5)The large perennial Sunflower with profuse lemon yellow flowers is Helianthus 'Lemon Queen'. It is actually a hybrid of 2 species of Helianthus. I've had it for several years and love the soft yellow blooms (as do the Bumblebees). Please note that it is very vigorous and grows HUGE. I divide mine every Spring and can't believe the growth it puts on each year. I also pinch or chop back in early Summer, or else it can grow large and floppy. There is also an annual Sunflower called 'Lemon Queen' (that would be Helianthus annuus). I ordered some seeds for that this year because I love soft yellow in the gardens....See MoreHelianthus 'Sunshine Daydream'
Comments (17)UPDATE: Last season TR made us aware of this wonderful helianthus and so I picked up a few of these plants this year. He later commented in another thread that SD has grown very large for him. Well given my limited space I was concerned but corresponding with the 'developer' of this perennial he did say that it can be successfully cut back significantly in June to get a much more reduced overall size (with of course blooms occurring much later). I am thinking that this particular specimen in my garden is a bit what he is describing. It is now coming into bloom at about 2 feet in height. It isnt a problem that it is flowering so late as I need more Autumn color....See MoreHow to tell difference between Heliopsys and Helianthus
