It's April 2014 - Part II, how is your build?
Comments (151)Loving everyone's updates and photos! It's especially fun getting progress updates from those who broke ground around the same time we did in September. To the rest of you, yes, there is light at the end of the tunnel. I promise! Sorry I don't post much. Our wood floors are in, most of the painting is done, cabinets and built ins are installed, all but one bathroom tiled. Next up is stair risers and treads, banisters, closet organizers and extra shelving, light fixtures, railing on our veranda and finishes to the front portico. Quartz countertops will be delivered in a couple weeks. I can't believe we're still on schedule for moving in by Memorial Day with all the weather setbacks we had this winter. The flurry of activity on finish details at our house is exciting and is definitely worth the necessary headaches and aggravation along the way. Michelle, we have a vacation home at Crystal Mountain, and I agree that the architectural style around the village is fabulous - so charming. We are building a custom home south of you along the lakeshore (with shed dormers and other Craftsman details... a la Crystal Mountain) with roughly 2800sf on main floor, 1000sf on second level and a fully finished walk out lower level for around $100sf not including lot, and I feel we chose quality materials. I certainly don't feel we skimped. My number may sound low per sf since I'm including the lower level in the calculation. Our goal was to downsize since we'll be empty nesters soon, but ... ummm that didn't happen. We expect lots of visitors during the summer months since, and we wanted to have room for them and all our future grandkiddos, who get their own bunk room on the second floor....See MorePlaster color vs Water Color
Comments (77)We are having a difficult time choosing a plaster color. We have seen pictures of Diamond Brite French Gray pools that look close to the more expensive blends and watercolors. We have a sunny morning and partial shade afternoon backyard. We do not want a green water color. We want a natural blue water color. Is french gray the right choice? Does anyone have pictures of Diamond Brite French Gray?...See MoreQuartz substitute for marble
Comments (58)Just to add my 2 cents: I have Vermont Danby marble for about 8 months now and have no stains on it. I use my kitchen all the time--tomatoes, vinegar, berries, wine, coffee, tea, etc. etc. and it is still the same color as the day it was installed. The sealers are wonderful and because the stone is indeed very dense it doesn't absorb stains. It does however etch, so if that would bother you, you should go with quartzite or engineered quartz. The beauty of the stone is unsurpassed in my opinion and I don't regret my decision one bit....See MoreGranite Installed. Can they adjust still?
Comments (28)I am with Pharaoh on this one. With the two big posts on the one end, it is impossible to get the same amount of overhang on all sides. So far we have just been talking about the two shorter ends and the overhang there not being equal. Of course they are not equal. The two posts extend out further than the rest of the perimeter of the island. Say, for grins, that you convince the granite company to remake the top. They make it so that the overhang above the posts is equal to the overhang above the apron on the other side of the island. Now look at the view of the corner like you posted alone, above. The lip extending over the short, end side of the island will now be longer than the lip over the post on the long side of the island! You would look at the corner, see the different overhangs on two sides of the same post and say it was wrong. What you saw when you looked at the island the first time was that the lip over the posts did not stick out as far as the lip over the side without the posts. You are right. This is true. It is true because the POSTS THEMSELVES create the asymmetry. Go stand at the end of the island with one post on each side in front of you. Measure the overhanging lip of granite above the apron that is between the posts. If that is the same amount of overhang that exists above the apron on the other three sides, the top was made correctly....See MoreMolly H.
