Help with gas fireplace surround.

I decided to get rid of the peach marble around the gas fire, which was surprisingly quite easy.

However dry wall was bound to come off. The builder put silicone on the back of the marble which made it easy yet has left some damage.

My question is to reTile, should I remove the drywall and add new? or should I remove the drywall and add backerboard? I originally thought about tiling over the marble but the tile would have come past the surround, so just decided to completely remove the damn stuff altogether.
