Haha, yeah that was my plan too. Pick something she would be able to grow with. We had BM gray owl at our old house and it looked nice w the lavender bedding, and I felt like I could change out the bedding and it would change up the room comepletly. But I felt like gray owl would be awful with the trim color. So I wanted a warm purplish gray. I painted the room myself, so when it came out more PURPLE than I wanted, I figured it was no more work to repaint in the future when she has an opinion than to repaint then. Unfortunately, I'm finding that girls have many more opinions much earlier than boys. My 18 mo DD has very strong opinions on which clothes, shoes, coat, etc that she wears. She also has strong opinions on what me and my DH wear. So I feel like it's only a matter of time before she starts critiquing my paint color choices :) DS is 4, took navy as close enough to black to make him happy, and hadn't looked back. DD is her own person, that's for sure! Cant wait to see what you end up with!

I want to use "Palest of Lemon", a Farrell Calhoun color, for my north facing, VERY cool light living room. I know most of you aren't familiar with that brand - it's a regional brand that is high quality. The LR has very cool natural light - including a Solatube, which gives off a blue light. During the day on my painted big swatch board it looks great, but at night with the warmer artificial lights, it shows it's green undertone. I'm wondering if installing cooler temperature bulbs might help. I wouldn't think blue would cancel green, but maybe I'm wrong. If there's another very light color from SW or BM with a LRV in the 60's or 70's that reads tan with no green undertone, please do let me know - I'll have them copy it! I really need to use this paint brand, as it is a VERY good regional brand and my budget allows for it. I don't have any furniture in there yet. I know I should wait till furniture is put in but we just cannot do that. I have taupe sofas and navy recliners. Nothing green in décor will be placed in there. This is just showing greenish with only the brown wood floors.

Everyone wants to pick paint first...well, not everyone, but too many. Paint should be the last thing picked because there are hundreds of color variations and I have even had paint custom mixed. Furniture has far fewer choices of colors. Find furniture you love and want to live with because it is beautiful, comfortable, in your budget, and fits your space. Paint is the least expensive part of this puzzle. After you find the furniture, drapes, lamps, etc for your room, then pick a paint color that works with your decor and the particular light in your space. For example, I moved from Florida to the Midwest—my new colors are influenced and dictated by the different quality of the sunlight and the grey winter sky. What works in your room might not work on the opposite side of the house. A gallon or two of paint and one weekend will make all the difference with the bonus of acquiring a new skill.

I am going to respectfully disagree with the notion that a color family should be eliminated because it can shift to violet. If you have a yellow and you start desaturating it you get beige. Yellows are between orange and green, so any color that isn't pure yellow is an orange yellow or a green yellow. Beige tones are those yellows that have had a bit of their opposing color added making them less pure and closer to gray. Beige ranges from pink beige (orange yellows desaturated) to yellow beige (purer yellows desaturated) to green beige (green beiges desaturated) The more the color becomes desaturated the more we move from beige to gray Taupe is the color between pink beige and violet gray and greige is the color between green beige and green gray. Once you desaturate beyond the point of beige, taupe or greige you reach gray. Gray can be a violet gray, blue gray or green gray. So the pink beiges desaturate and become more and more and more violet until you get to blue gray. The green beiges desaturate and become more and more and more blue until you get to blue gray. This is a useful chart that gives you the central focal point for each color. Here is a chart of SW paint colors that have an L value (light/luminance) between 85 and 90 Kestrel White =86.06 and a hue value between 80 and 85 Kestrel White=82.47 And a Chroma <31 Do you see how the colors go from pink/violet undertones to fairly saturated yellow/orange. To get a bit more orange/beige and less violet gray you need to raise the chroma. Changing the hue up or down a notch will give the following results: Hue between 75 and 80: ( more orange) Hue between 85 and 90 (more green) Before paying for a whole bunch of samples Pick out a few different colors that are just a bit more chromatic and in the same color family and one color family either direction. Bring them home and decide on 2 to order in a larger size. Keep track of where the colors you are picking fall within the charts above. When does the chroma reach too yellow - when is it too gray. When is the hue too orange, when is the hue too green. You can save a lot of money working systematically rather than jumping all over the place and just ordering colors based on some recommendation of what works in someone else's home. Although paint names are chosen based on what name may sell the best, I think there is some pattern when you look at the SW colors with the word Beige in the name vs the SW colors with the word Gray in the name where the L>70 Beige - just a couple of Chromas below 10 Gray - all the Chromas are below 9.02 and most below 7
