The Best-Laid Plans . . . (Sigh . . .)
Comments (13)I honestly think that, as we continue to lose rose growers and vendors, and fewer and fewer varieties are offered at all, it would be wise for everyone really interested in roses to learn to propagate. Start, first, with learning to root cuttings. There are many methods, and many on-line guides. (See, below, the Gold Coast Heritage Roses Group for one article.) Once you're proficient at that, learn to bud. People like us can prevent the loss of many rarer roses by propagating them, growing them, and sharing them with others. Until better days come again. Comments (27)My favorite place to get roses from is Palatine Roses. Their bareroots are huge and do better for me than anything else. Other good places are Ashdown, Heirloom, Roses Unlimited, EuroDesert, and Wisconsin Roses. I've had bad luck with Hortico's roses. Wisconsin Roses does sell roses that require a bit more work on your part, but I was very happy that my first rose from them got very big this year and bloomed a lot. The other rose I bought from them died but they are replacing it next spring and I'll be more careful with it. I had good experiences with Edmunds and Jackson and Perkins, but JP changed hands and other people had problems with Edmunds, so I can't really recommend those when there are so many other places that have better records. Always check Garden Watchdog (wirosarian linked it) before you order from any nursery....See MoreRegan online bare root ordering will end soon (Jan 31st)
Comments (29)I got 'Cherry Frost', 'The Pilgrim' (to replace one I lost to RRD), and 'Good Day Sunshine'. Can't find GDS anywhere else (yet) - thanks for the warning to get these ordered, Bayarea_girl! I'm confident 'Cherry Frost' will show up at own-root vendors like Northland, High Country, and Roses Unlimited in the next few years, but a 2-year old bareroot is a good jumpstart for climbers. GDS is grafted - I'd prefer own-root like the other two, but I don't know if/when we'll see this one hit other vendors. May the roses you want be in stock, and good luck with your bare-roots Gardenweb!...See MoreWHITE ROSES: 2021 Color Threads
Comments (149)@rosecanadian, Carol, Yes, I love tge lighter pinks, but there is something magical about Eden… she is huge now and I have bought another Eden for other side of bay window, too. Her blooms are English appearance, delicate. Heirloom Roses has the best video if oruning her-she has such captivating majestic blooms. But she bloomed only one flush this 2nd year and few blooms in summer. I hope she will bloom more next year… going to fertilize her a lot! I posted her on recent Eden thread… Many day she blooms more co tinual after a few years. Francis Meilland is a dream rose-bloomed 3 flushes first year. FM Blooms are very big-majestic!! The ohotos never show how big they really are-ir capture tgeir real beauty. They are both an ”eye popping ” surprise when they bloom! Check out thread ”Eden Climbing Rose blooming question,” for EDEN PHOTOS-ALL TYPES OF EDENS… My photos… hope others will post…. https://www.houzz.com/discussions/4013161/eden-climbing-rose-blooming-question...See Morecyndita (west coast zone 9)
