If you mean overhead light fixture, I do like the first one suggested by laura_04 IF those bulbs have the same kind of base as old style light bulbs so the bulbs will be easier to find and less costly to replace because the metal/wire could protect the light from ... say ... a pillow fight..

You might want to consider a ceiling fan since that would help move the air around in the room and keep it fresher -- sometimes a challenge in a boys bedroom.

Boy's rooms can start to smell like a locker room as they grow up. Maybe a fan light would be a good choice to keep the air circulating. Are you able to place the beds flanking the window or does that block something we can't see in your photos?

IF you decide to change the window dressing, consider plantation shutters -- they'll not absorb smells from sweaty tennis shoes the way fabric anything might and they're gender neutral..

An other light idea might be individual swing arm wall hung lights.

If you do choose similar shelving, affix it securely to the wall so there is no "fall" issue.

Robbin - you brought back memories that I had completely forgotten about. My brother and I did the same thing all the time. Hours of fun.

I put this in my boys’ homework/tv room to get light and fan. Robbin makes a valid point about throwing balls etc. but I think having a fan in the bedroom is a big plus.

I agree with the previous poster that mentioned an LED light - here is one I found on Amazon that is similar to the one I put in a basement bedroom and a basement play room. The ones I have have a plastic cover for any horse play that’s going on and to have lots of light in a room so they can read and do homework is also a plus! My son when he was a teen had a lot electronics in his room and liked having a stand fan because his room would get hot! Nightstand lamps for bedside reading. Every time I see a light like you have in their current room I always remember someone telling me those are “boob” lights LOL. Might not tell your boys that they’ll never look at all light fixture the same! same

Even boys may like to have something of interest on the walls. Maybe a Nerf basketball net and some posters of favorite athletes? Yes! to a cage-style light fixture which is immune to pillow fights and flying balls. I like washable medium-colored bedspreads or coverlets which don’t show dirt.

They also need more lighting and separate desks if they do homework in their room...or just more lighting if they do homework elsewhere. I also like comfortable chairs in a bedroom if they are readers...it’s more comfortable than sitting on their beds to read. Let them make some suggestions, too, so the bedroom will include some of their personalities. If the bed covering is a bit heavier, they will be able to straighten up their beds more easily.

I found a rustic basketball goal for my sons room at hobby lobby. Put it above his headboard with an industrial metal shelf on the wall next to it to hold a nerf basketball. He also has a broken light fixture. lol

Please - no ceiling lights in a bedroom - it'll look like a doctor's office. Much better is a table lamp or wall sconce in each corner at chest height.

In would take the curtains off and replace with roll up shades . Then place lamps on the night tables and ask each to choose their favorite poster or painting or photographs for the walls and make a collage of photos or their favorite things ...for decoration . Where do they do their homework ? Is there room in the bedroom or do you have another room for that ....?

I have no idea what purpose sheer drapes serve so I would not do them at all. As for lighting Edison bulbs are horrible for lighting. Kids need good lighting in a bedroom since most of them do homework in their rooms. Yes boys rooms are usually stinky but having them put their dirty clothes at least in a hamper helps.The room needs some personality so maybe get the boys involved in what they would like on the walls and do they love the pink bedding or is it red.I think the blinds are fine . My Dad made us each a huge cork board to post pictures ,ticket stubs all kinds of stuff that changes as kids age. It saves the paint and adds a lot of personality to room. They could each have one above their bed. I liked to read so always had a table lamp but now most have a laptop and rarely bother putting on the light.Our grandkids have a min. of electronics in their rooms because they do interfere with proper sleep.My one DIL actually removes phones and laptops at about 11PM during the school week.

Hi ladies, and thanks for your input!!!!! a lot to think about.... They do their homework in the dining room. As for desks, each has their own desk. one in the hallway and another one in the main office next to me. They have blue table lamp between the beds, but I want to change it. Im thinking of buying four big light brown frames (to go with curtains) so they can display their art work!!!! My kids dont do sport, i wish but they dont care, they are into art, music and drawing and video games! checking amazon now to look for light fixtures!

PS: we have roll up shades, the curtains are for added warmth....

Do like the neutral look of your choice of lamp(s) -- not so sure they'd be great for reading/studying in bed though. Would want tall thin (metal post) lamp with white shades for more light if the boys will be reading/studying in bed.

Whatever lamp you choose, you might want to get two lamps.

Overhead light will work well if fan not an option -- they require a sturdier box.

I would get a flush mount light or fan combo or those with cages. Kids like to swings things around and, in my experience, may break glass globes on lower hanging lights.

You could put wall scones by each bed- I plan on doing that in my boys’ room (they are 11 and 12). We have a ceiling fan with a light, a masculine looking, modern one. Good luck!!

I realize you only asked about lighting, but if budget allows, I’d consider getting a headboard for each bed that incorporates some shelving. Each boy could have space for his own things, and could have a reading lamp that could be aimed so one can sleep while one reads in bed.
