How to Keep a Public Memorial Garden from Looking Hodge Podge
Comments (3)Upfront, I don't no nuthin' about such gardens per se. But I do know something about charities and donations-- Sounds like what you could bring to the table is a design and vision--the more you've got it actually sketched out, phase 1, phase 2, etc, according to practicalities, site development, the better. Then what you do is recruit people to donate toward this vision--here's a JM going in over here, there's a bench (with plaque!) going in over there; would one of these be something you'd like to do in memory of your loved one? I take a lesson from laag The Great on this forum (kind of just ribbing there), but he's been so helpful. The more order and strong design you can get into place with the hardscape and larger plantings, you can then tolerate more randomness in, in front of, and around that. Also, you can, and should, even PLAN for randomness- 'cause you can expect it--so you could figure out what areas and what sorts of plants lend themselves to smaller and more idiosyncratic memorials. Think of building or remodeling a church (well, the typical modern-era church)--people don't just bring in stuff from home or that they've gone out to buy or everyone bring his own pew and book. Some folks donate toward the organ, the church ladies's auxilliary funds the new kitchen appliances, the pews may be dedicated to loved ones, folks buy hymnals and a dedication is placed inside. But it's all part of a plan. It's aslo kind of like getting listed with a store for a wedding or baby shower--you're giving some guidance for things needed, with some big-ticket items, but very important to include lots of smaller-ticket items (so really, a good "range"), and also expect some folks to show up with stuff you never imagined. Another aspect might be maintenance. You know how different organizations take on a section of road? Will it be likely or possible that a person or group would volunteer to spruce up or maintain an area? A final aspect is the difference between "memorial" and general public garden. Memorial in terms of plantings implies to me some kind of pemanence (the bench, the oak, the JM, for example). So that could be the kind of randomness to avoid, or you'll have random trees and shrubs competing with each other. But also, cash donations are memorials, just like to a charity, so you'd like to encourage non-itemized donations. So the other aspect to the overall garden is the ephemeral aspect, with seasonal plantings and displays, which will be suitable for a lot of donors who realize that garden plantings come and go (e.g., people subsidize theater, symphony performances that are not "permanent" things). And really, no one has to die (for the garden!)-you will be encouraging living "in honor of" donations as a counter to the need to buy things for people. This approach is very popular with older people who have finally figured out we all have too much stuff....See MoreHow low can I go??
Comments (12)I would say look for the consignment furniture shop for used furniture from good manufacterers. I found, by the recommendation of my interior designer, the consignment furniture store that consigns only high-end, quality furniture. Some of what I found are manufacterers like Henredon, Baker, Mailland-Smith, Ralph Lauren (by Henredon). Good furniture are built to last for generations so I like the idea of buying good consign furniture. I've bought a Henredon solid mahogany coffee table, nice dining chair set, and end tables from them. I love all of them!!, especially it made me not worry too much or trying to be careful about using these furniture at home 'coz I didn't pay as much, and it's already USED in good condition! Not having to worry about stuff I own is very important to me. If you get sofa that you like but don't like the fabric, you can also slipcover it to match the decor....See Morehow low can you go? Comments (45)Hi dadoes, When you turn it off completely ... ... that's just before you move out, I imagine? Up here in Ontario, there's a big difference between turning the thermostat to the lowest level and turning the furnace off completely (unless you have no freezable stuff in the house). At lowest level, and in cold weather you'd better have someone check the place every couple of days to ensure that the furnace is operating, the temp usually runs around 55 degrees - stuff doesn't freeze. Throw the switch, the furnace goes to sleep, within a few days, freezable stuff has friz. When daughter and hub. bought a house that had been unoccupied for a while several years ago, the bank swore that heat had been maintained. Yeah? Well, if so, how to account for pipes, having frozen, now be leaking in about 8 places in the walls?? Big difference between thermostat turned to lowest level and throwing the switch, in many areas. Hope you can find all of the hot air that you need (at this time of year). ole joyful...See MoreSellers - when does the negotiating stop? How low do you go?
Comments (29)Thank you. We have been so pleased at the traffic and all the offers and the wonderful feedback on our farm, but it has not been a good experience with our agent. She has been dishonest and we don't feel she's been working on our behalf. On this deal, we sent a counter to buyer's agent, our agent called and said they want the contribution to as-built. I told her we will agree to pay half that, but do not want them coming back and picking our counter apart so please check with them to make sure that every thing else in our counter is acceptable if we agreed to half contribution. She called back and said yes they're fine with everything in your counter. Great! So I get their counter yesterday, expecting our last price, half contribution etc. and it came in with lower price. I asked for her advice because this was a lower price than they had agreed, and she told me that they never agreed to our counter, and we had discussed the lower price. Not! GRRR. So we signed at the lower price but needless to say are not happy with our agent. This is not the first time this has happened in our negotiations with three offers and it has made it so much more stressful. We just want to get through this one without giving up too much more, and if it doesn't close we'll be switching agents. I appreciate the opportunity to vent....See MoreHelen
