I have a capped gas line in my fireplace, how do I use it?
Comments (1)mindlord70, there should be a gas valve located outside the fireplace somewhere. Look for a socket along the walls adjacent to the fireplace near the floor. It should require a special key to turn it on. Also, you may need a starter pipe if there is not one there. In any case, please do your homework before attempting to light a fireplace. If you never used this fp before, its best to have it checked out first by a pro. -jasper...See MoreWhat should I do with this fireplace
Comments (10)Thanks so much, everyone! I will take the interim step of starting over with the decor before I do anything else. Grapefruit1_ar, thank you for the photos. If I had to pick one, I'd keep the tile and replace the mantel. I so appreciate the lovely support from several of you, and I believe that this may be legitimate 1920s style, but those columns are just too fussy for my taste. I much prefer the plain or paneled styles. Sabrina Alfin, thanks for articulating the issue with the small pattern of the tile competing with the vertical lines of the mantel. That's helpful (and now I can't unsee it). The tiles already have the look of a very faint white wash. Would white grout make a difference? Or a gray mantel? Thanks again!...See MoreWhat should I do to this enormous floor to ceiling 3 sided fireplace?
Comments (32)Hope finding the brick above gives you a little peace of mind. Years ago, (dating myself) we had an oval shaped cast iron wood burning heater downstairs and a metal shelf hung between rafters in the ceiling to hold brick above the ceiling and thru the roof. The triple walled pipe attached to the back of the heater took the smoke from the heater to the brick. Covering that heater and pipe with the least possible brick or stone -- least possible expense -- would likely have resulted in a triangle shaped chimney. That is why I suspected you may find a wood burning stove or fireplace insert and some triple walled metal pipe beneath the stone -- but you may not be able to know for sure unless/until the stone is removed. Even if you eventually discover you don't like the look of the brick behind the stone downstairs much or any better than the current uneven stone, it would be easier to clad "straight/smooth" brick with something you do like than to try to alter the current stone. Also, without the stone adding to the size of the fireplace, it is likely there would be less of the floor to redo to match your new flooring. Looking forward to the "after" pics when you make your home/fireplace what you want it to be....See MoreWhat should I put in this random, corner by my fireplace?
Comments (7)Similar to Jinx...consider removing the trunk and the bookcase, put small cabinets of some kind plus artwork above. Quick and dirty mockup,,,I chose art that was vertically oriented to make the room seem taller as well. Then picked some random cabinets off google. They aren't my favorite but what I could find quickly, lol. Also then they give you a place to store your piano music....See MoreSueb20
