help! craftsman mower, with 16hp-ohv b&s engine starting problem
Comments (16)If you want to rule out the valve issue, then just roll this tractor to where your car is. Put a set of booster cables on the car battery. Put the positive cable onto the terminal on the starter that has the heavy cable attached to it. Take the negative booster cable and press it firmly against the engine block or tractor chassis with the ignition key in the "ON" position. If the engine spins over easily and starts, remove the negative cable from the engine block or tractor frame. Try this a few times. If you get the same results, then you just proved two things. 1. The valves are likely adjusted correctly 2. Your tractor has a seperate starting solenoid somewhere. So let's pretend that the above scenario has occurred. Next step. Take the booster cable off of the starting mower. Trace the heavy wire that is on the starter motor back to the starter solenoid. Put the positive booster cable onto the OTHER big terminal on this solenoid. Clamp the negative booster cable lead to a clean spot on the engine block or the tractor frame so that it makes good electrical contact. Now try starting the tractor with the keyswitch. If the clicking noise is still there, the a new solenoid should solve the problem. The clicking sound is the solenoid pulling in. However, the round disc inside the solenoid is not making proper electrical contact and needs to be replaced....See Moretrouble getting my B&S tractor to start today
Comments (4)applecroftfarm - if you look around closely, you should find an I.D. plate on your tractor. It may be under the tilting seat. Get the full model number, serial number, etc. off it and then go to the john deere website. There's a good chance that you can view the owners manual there or at least order one up....See MoreB&S 20HP won't start
Comments (8)You swapped your old flywheel onto the replacement engine? Very possible the key slipped out of the keyway and the ignition timing is off. The method for placing the key into the keyway is often done improperly. The correct method is to set the flywheel in place on the crankshaft taper and THEN...you gently work the key into the keyway, lightly tapping it down to seat it. Some folks try to put the key into the keyway first and then slip the flywheel down over it. Not good because if the key slips down, it may fall out or worse, the flywheel can be tightened down off center. Go back and check your flywheel key. Even if the flywheel was already on the engine, the popping you hear is a good indication of "out of time spark"....See MoreLawnflite 604 with 15.5Hp B&S engine starts and stops
Comments (5)Hi, Thanks for the comments, thankfully I have resolved the problem. Never seen this before but both my problems were caused by the starter solenoid. I had changed it initally and it did not solve my problem so put old one back on, then found safety switch wire at the brake had heated and broken, repaired that and still did not solve the problem. In trying to aliminate all posibilities I removed the starter solenoid and tested it, it was indeed faulty. Replaced and reconnected everything, mower started on the key and run perfectly. Thanks Again....See MoreGardenHo_MI_Z5
