The rarest, most expensive Sans ?

Dudes and dudettes ! I’ve been thinking about this for a long time; which Sans would you consider to be rare ? And are the rare ones also the most expensive ones ?

I’ve been looking for an Eylensis for nearly two years now. It’s a slow growing little sucker with a very modest appearance, not really intresting at all had it not been for the fact that it is virtually impossible to purchase anywhere in the world. If it would have been as common as the ordinary Trifasciata I wouldn’t have given it a second glance, but now...well, as with anything rare, I like it.

But are there other rare Sans ? If so, which ones ? I understand that new cultivars are presented every year, but here I’m speaking about rare Sans that has been widely accepted and given a proper name and not entirely new cultivars.

Price is deterred by two factors; Supply and demand. Low supply and high demand will always bring in the most money. Just being rare is (shouldn't be) the only factor. Not being able to purchase one does not do it for me.

Myself, anything rare plus variegated will do it for me. I'm too cheap (wise) to pay over $40 for a plant. In almost all cases some one else also loves a certain plant and sooner or later they become more common and price goes down and supply goes up.

Now in the case of hard to grow, forget it. If it's not easy, I'm not wasting my time or money on it.

Never heard of S. eylensis. Had to google it to see one. Looks like the one Woodnative gave me. S. Blue Bat. of course when bigger they are completely different. Like other plants collected by Lavranos, they are different and rare but becoming more and more common.

Advise; Buy something you really love to look at even at a great cost. In time you will reward yourself many times.

Rarest...Try S.zeylanica. Lots of people - ordinary amateurs - say they have it, "I bought it under this name". Wee, they haven't, all they have is S.trifasciata. Few experts say that they know what it looks like and write long and wise essays on the subject, quoting other learned experts. And practically no one ever shows a photo of the real plant :)

so much jabber!you guys are all Podagees!only Hawn's know what is that,cuz!ha ha!Best true to life photos of lavender/or close as can get to purple in my opinion is BBB[metallisa,purple serendipity[wrong spell]M<etallica!!They have a gorgeous deep red w/purple highlites[4got name]but its there.Fla.colors also has a metallica color plant,I think its called Geisha.Both of tese vendors have made my collection and life Very Brilliant!!They will always have a customer in me!Good sound advice for troubleshooting as well.GOD Bless you both!!L.Alligood

Outliers is an interesting book. The notion that "luck, coincidence and effort/hard work are generally all required to successful" at least looks at the mix that fate, destiny and the sweat of the brow play in most lives. But I would go a little further & still broaden the concept of "success" to include so much more than career or financial achievement. I think it is a big mistake (that our culture at large makes all the time) to automatically assume that a well-to-do person, or someone with a lofty title, is "successful" at life. They may be, of course, but they may also be full of anger, selfishness, & greed. They may have struggled & strived the joy out of their lives. They may never be satisfied. That is not success in my view. I do believe that life has plans for all of us. As I stated in another post, if we are attached to an image of our lives looking a certain way, we will suffer if life doesn't comply. That can happen at any income level. or..."Life is what's happening when we're making other plans," as John Lennon reminded us. I don't think being wealthy is in the cards for us all, no matter how hard we work. That's not the life every person is meant to lead. But that's not such sad or bad news either! People who have given energy & attention to what is real & capable of providing true happiness (connections, creativity, learning, growth, service, loving) are the most successful, in my view! Money may or may not stem from their endeavors. Either way, what could be more wonderful or more a marker of success, than when people truly enjoy what they are doing, find meaning through it, and are loving & at peace?

Sonoma Halo and Pastelegance, they were $350 and $300 respectively. Saw both at the APG convention 2014 and had to have them. Both have buds that look like they're going to make it this year! I also have Lemon Chiffon and Watermelon Wine, both were $150 when I bought them. Lemon Chiffon has 1 bud this year, plant looks pretty sad after all of the rain and hail we've had but I think the bloom will make it. Watermelon Wine seems to be one of the latest bloomers, just getting to the stage to see buds soon.

fof, He was as tough as the lands he favoured, but a big-hearted man with unlimited time to answer questions about EVERY difficult plant, and many not-so-hard, that he grew magnificently well. I can still hear his disagreeing 'Bah!' when someone within my hearing was complaining to him about how hard it was to sprout Mamm. luethyii or an obscure Ariocarpus. He has, ICYDK, a plant named for him, typically cryptic and obscure - Pediocactus peeblesianus f. menzelii. I'm pleased he touched your life, too. I'll bet he's tickled pink about it as he sips his 5 pm G&T. Somewhere on the Web is a cactus ID / photo site that has pictures of all of his plants which he kindly shared with the world.

I agree that there really is a S. zeylanica. Most have it as mislabeled trifasciata but the real one is not very attractive looking. So where's your picture?

Sansevieria zeylanica – According to the University of Florida – “Most plants sold as Sansevieria zeylanica are trifasciata. True Sansevieria zeylanicahas little appeal as an ornamental.”

Stush, this is my point exactly! I don't have "true" zeylanica, maybe some experts have it (I read about two who definitively possess it) - but nobody shows pictures! Even at different forums with endless discussions on zeylanica/trifasciata, there is no definitive photo shown with label "This is how it should REALLY look". I don't understand this complete reticence. And that is why I say - jokingly - that zeylanica is the rarest sans of all :)

Basia, Yes, you are most definitely right. I have never seen one or picture of one myself. I guess it is classified with Big Foot and UFO's.
