The rod will show unless you have a valance to hide it . I think that is why grommet drapes became so popular the rod could be attractive and no cords to hassle with.Maybe forgo the sheers and use blinds instead , it looks like JC has some quite nice looking single traverse rods , not sure if they come long enough .

You'll need a double traverse rod. It will not be cheap. The pinch pleat curtains and sheers can be custom ordered from JC Penney, but do look at their in-store displays to see if you like their quality. Installation of rod and curtains is best done by a professional because the rod is very long and the curtains will be quite heavy. Grommet curtains are more popular now because they are much, much cheaper and easier to clean and press.

I used to do window coverings many years ago. I did not even think that traverse rods were even available anymore.

You could DIY your own pinch pleats but it would likely be more complicated and more work than you might be bargaining for. And, it would likely be quite costly, either way.

I also used to sell draperies at Pennys and I would not recommend any of those that were there at that time. Pennys is having a lot of trouble and the one near me has closed.

You will probably be better to think about it a bit further. Traverse rods really are ugly.

For those suggesting grommet top drapes, I was thinking the length is so long that multiple supports would typically be needed and I don’t want curtains to sit in the middle of the windows, I want them fully open. Are there drapery today that would only require a center support with a length like that?

It's unlikely you are going to get away with just a center bracket on a length of 173 inches.But if you did a ceiling mount, maybe it would matter less how many supports you have.

What is your budget for this project?

Was hoping to spend maybe $500ish? We had an estimate for professionally installed roller shades from hunter Douglas and that came in around $2100. I don’t love the idea of roller shades though and the cost was way too high.

How would a ceiling mount require less supports?

I don’t want cheap looking drapes though. I’m open to spending more for higher quality. Haven’t gotten as far as pricing out drapery panels yet since I don’t even know where to start.

We replaced all of our windows in our home so several still need window coverings and I’m feeling overwhelmed with all the options. Also just finished a major kitchen and main floor reno so trying not to spend too much. I prefer naked windows rather than spending money on something that looks cheap or I will change my mind on in a couple years.

Looking at the Smith and Noble website, just the traverse double rod will cost you more than your budget.

By not including the door in the coverage, you don’t have stackback room on both sides of the window. You might be better off including the door (and increasing cost) in the window coverage plan.

As far as supports, traverse rods, both wall and ceiling mount, have support brackets which don’t interfere with the draw.

also, you might want to draw the drapes to one side rather than split in the middle, but you’d need enough space for more stackback on one side which won’t cover the window when open.

I have been exploring Wave and Ripple Top curtains for my home. Actually planning on making the curtains myself as it is just a tape sewn onto the curtain material to create the look, but the rods can be decorative or square and can traverse long expanses, can be wall mounted or ceiling mountain.

I like the look better than triple pleat and want the gliding motion that I would get with the triple pleat.

I have double sliders in my family room and needed to be able to fully open/close also. I purchased something at Lowes but is no longer available. Look on amazon Rod Desyne Sphere Traverse Rod. It doesn't allow for 2 sets of drapes but does handle a set of pleated or non-pleated drapes. This is a decorative cordless manual rod. I ordered 2 sets of rods (they do come in different widths and 2 colors) and pieced together to get the width I needed, the poles from 2 sets will work together. The brackets grasp the rod around the TOP of rod (I used 5 brackets across) instead of the rod sitting in the bracket, and the clips fully slide either direction. You can use the clips to hold at top of pleat, or insert drapery hook into the ring on roller clip. It also works using the clip with rod pocket panels, to form soft pleats. I use a wand to open/close mine.

It looks like you may have to have one way draw traverse rod. You probably don't want drapery stacking along where the left hand edge of the window and the door come together. You would likely have them draw one way, to the right. Drapery that wide will take quit a few inches to stack back and that will take out part of the visual window width. Just a thought to consider.

Can I ask what you decided? I am having a very similar dilemma.

We had someone from Smith & Noble out and had an estimate around 6,000-9,000 for the traversing with custom drapes. It would be my ideal but not in our budget. So we will likely just end up doing cellular room darkening shades to reduce glare from the window on the TV. We did custom traversing for our dining room which has somewhat smaller windows.

Was the $6000-$9000 Smith and Noble estimate for Ripplefold or pinch pleated drapes?

I think that was for single pleat. We priced both single pleat and wavefold for the dining room and wavefold was actually slightly cheaper and I liked the look better so went with that

I should say for the living room estimate we included coverage of the door with a center draw

We ended up doing ikea traversing hardware ceiling mounted and curtains. The total was around $500. Not the smoothest pull of the curtains (6 panels)but it meets our need and budget! We don’t open/close daily.
