Red-twig Dogwood and/or winterberry suckers
Comments (3)Where ya at, Halley? If I'm reading you right, it's "live stakes" you seek. These are branches from suitable shrub species-red twigged dogwood is indeed one-cut during dormancy, which is pretty much right now, and stuck in soft, moist ground to root. I live in the very land of red twigged dogwood, so I'm sure I could find you some. Time is the limiting factor. Lots going on. On the other hand, simply purchasing the shrubs would be inexpensive and would work faster towards populating your yard with these plants. In fact, if you could source bare-root plants, they're extremely inexpensive. You could get a whole bundle of 20 or 50 plants-I'm making up the numbers-for few dollars. Bare-root works great if planted while dormant. +oM...See Morebest berries for the south ? louisiana
Comments (2)maybe something like goji berry, if you go for a black berry go for rubus fruticosa '' thornless evergreen'' its a very vigoriious thornless blackberry that is a very heavy cropper. Japanese wineberry has thorns, lower yield but it is the most ornamental one with the best taste. some lemon grass species (cymbopogon citratus) are also hardy in your zone and provide good taste and reliable crop. maybe get perilla which is also a fast grower. some opuntia species are thornless and have edible fruits and pads. amaranthus species that have edibles. some other tropical/subtropical stuff would be Feijoa sellowiana, Eriobotrya japonica, Citrofortunella microcarpa, Persea americana, pomegranate etc. All trees take a while to produce a worthwhile crop so i would go for bushes, cultivars and shrubs/ climbers like kiwis and blackberries, goji berries etc....See Morewinterberry male - early or late
Comments (3)Thank you JohnFromPerryCoPA and GardenGranma for your replies. I noticed the first of the male's flowers today, the females are in bud. JohnFromPerryCoPA- My experience has been that the nursery plants are not always flowering at the right time (unless the are local stock)or are too small to flower. I could try the local arboretum, though. GardenGranma- I have never paid attention to the flowering times of my winterberries before since the female always produced fruit for the birds. But last year, the female did not have berries and I was interested in adding more females - so got interested in the flowering times. If this year's flowering times are typical (male is earlier than the female), then as you have observed for your plants, , there is enough overlap for my plants and I should be free to choose any female cultivar I want. I am interested in Red Sprite because of the size....See MoreWinterberry Questions
Comments (65)I don't think they will need watering to survive unless there is extreme drought. But, I think you will get better crops of berries if you can water them. My brother has some planted on a gentle slope, beyond the reach of a garden hose. He mulches then and they produce fruit, but i think they are happier if you have a low spot or maybe beside a pond. I've read that you only need one male for 4 or 5 females. If i planted 5 shrubs, i would make 2 of them males, since if one of the males tanks, you lose a pollinator. I learned that the hard way with other hollies....See Morepatsepa6b
