'Aunt Nellie's Pickled Beets' vs. my home-made ones.
Comments (17)bragu, I think beets are one of those things that you like or you don't. I love beets but don't like pickles so much. Other family members like pickles and not beets, LOL. Some like both and every year I can pickled beets, either red or golden, depending on what's available when I have time to do them. I use Grandma's old recipe for some family members and the one with pickling spice for others. I did win a Grand Champion ribbon at the fair a couple of years before COVID with the pickled golden beets, but they are much milder than the red ones and the pickling process seems to take away most of the earthy flavor. Comments (7)Kristin, It is hard to suggest to someone else what to do with their seedlings because none of us live in your exact climate/weather conditions nor do we know how strong your plants are, so we're just guessing. I usually harden my plants off first for a week on a screened-in porch where the screening provides some wind and sun protection. Then they go outside for 1 hr. the first day, 2 hrs. the second, 3 hrs. the third, etc. Once they are able to stay outside from sunrise to sunset, I leave them on the screened-in porch or in the potting shed which protects them from night-roaming plant-eaters like rabbits and deer but exposes them to cooler night air. If the temps are forecast to drop below 45 degrees, they go into the well-insulated barn. If a surprise snow storm or high winds arrive, they may find themselves spending a day or two in the garage. I never leave mine outside in the yard at night because if I did, the deer would throw a wild party and invite all their friends and I wouldn't have any seedlings by the next morning. I'd say that if you feel comfortable leaving them outside at night, go ahead, but be aware that any wild things, including domestic cats and dogs, raccoons, squirrels, rabbits, etc. roaming around at night may 'visit' them, and sometimes you have surprising number of animals roaming even in suburban areas. Also, always trust your instincts about the weather and do not trust the forecast. I have had a forecast of an overnight low of 50 lull me into a false sense of security only to have plants damaged when the overnight low dropped to 32 degrees. I learned an important lesson there. If your wind is forecast to blow higher than maybe 12-15 mph all night, I wouldn't leave them out. They need a break from the wind, and it has been relentless all week and should be strong again tomorrow. Dawn...See MoreMy aunt is a wonderful person!
Comments (25)Hi ros and all, well aunt got the death sentence a few days ago, stage 4 Grioblastoma (sp?). We are all very devastated. I talked to her yesterday and she is like me, a straight talker. She doesn't want to be pitied or for anyone to pretend that it's not as serious as it is. It is so much easier for me to talk to realists. So, we talked about how she's getting bombarded with people wanting her to go the natural route and how some friends are claiming she will be cured with a certain kind of tea. She is very overwhelmed with the choices on cancer treatment centers as well. I do know the FDA just approved the Novo TTF cap that can be used 12 hours a day after the initial hit of chemo and radiation, we talked about that and how there is a possibility to buy her some time, save some brain cells and have some better life quality. The U.S studies are conservative with a small study group of less than 300 but still seem to offer some good, the Israeli studies (where invented) go back to 2007 and show an improved life span and in some cases shrinking tumors. So, at least there is something although no cure. As far as we know there is only one trial going on at the moment for her multi tumor brain cancer type. She has close to two weeks before she can start anything due to waiting for the biopsy area to heal. They are taking her off the steroids but I have no idea why. Her speech is getting slurred and she has trouble with balance/ walking but this was there before biopsy and is not a result of...just getting worse and moving fast. I'm still very upset that rotten murderous people are walking the earth healthy and she is sooo good but so ill. A few weeks ago she was sitting in my kitchen, normal, laughing and having a drink....See MoreAunt Margy's Rose
Comments (8)So sorry, this was the sequel to some rose pictures I posted on the Antique Forum and, without my changing anything, it moved over here to the regular Rose forum. It shouldn't even be possible for that to happen, but I guess the system needs a little more tweaking....See More- 6 years ago
