Need some insight on Pleiospilos nelii

Hello everyone, I have a Pleiospilos nelii that is in process of 'splitting'. When I purchased this guy back in September, I watered it maybe twice and have left it alone since. As stated earlier, it's in process of splitting; however, if you look closely at the photos I'm attaching, you can see the tissue near the crown of the plant appears mushy to me. In images I've seen from others, the tissue around the crown appear firm. The plants I've seen that have that 'mushy' look are going through root rot. Have any of you seen this? Ultimately, t

he best thing for me is to be patient and see how this turns out, but I wanted to ask to get any advice from folks as well.

That little dehydrated piece is wha’s leftover of the dead flower. I think it was once the sepal of the flower. Just leave it alone and keep moisture from pooling up in that area. Those little bits will dry up eventually.

Same thing going on with my Pleiospilos simulans.

I don't see anything that looks mushy. Though, I admit I've not had much success growing these so don't have one. I don't have one to study on a daily basis.

Hanz-- maybe you posted this elsewhere, but would you describe in detail the potting materials that you use both for adult plants and seedlings? What geographic area are you in? I understand that the adult plants will take as much sunshine as they can get, which can sometimes be a challenge in my area. What kind of watering schedule do you adhere to? I've been using scoria for other plants that require excellent drainage, wondering if a mix including finer scoria might be desirable for these too? No need to sterilize garden loam/ soil - it's unlikely that anything harmful will survive. I've used garden soil for mesemb seeds without a problem. Algae is the biggest enemy, and algae spores are everywhere. Fresh air works wonders! Decent garden soil in a 1:4 ratio with perlite will suffice - just be careful that it doesn't get too soggy, depending on the clay content. Make sure to use a deep pot - like 4-6+ inches. Pleiospilos have deeper roots than most mesembs. It's nearly impossible to find something that tall and also narrow. Those ugly red plastic beer/ party cups are a good size! Throw some chunks of rock into the pot to reduce soil volume a little. x

Thanks, everyone, for your help and especially the correct identification! It didn't look like nelii to me but I was going by the tag. I ought to know by now not to trust them, especially since I found an Echeveria azulita in a yellow bulbine pot in the same Albertson's trip. Also thanks for the tip on scales. What solution concentration should I use? The leaves are worse today. They are soft (especially the pup) and when I went to take a look at the roots I saw that they were practically non-existent. Tiny clump of roots barely under the surface, some ON the surface. No mealies, no rot that I could see, just very dry at this point. Not squishy, soft. Should I give it a spray? A soak? A mist? Nothing? I know in nelii that the old leaves dry up and new emerge, is that what this one is trying to do? If so, should I avoid ALL watering and let it do its thing? So many questions, thanks for your help!

Hi AMC, Thx for clarifying, not dumb, maybe just mis-spoke? Anyway, I was just trying to understand. While I don't grow these, I've seen/known some folks who do. I've heard that one watering at the wrong time of year can cause the whole thing to collapse like mush into itself, I guess I thought that might be what you meant. (Sorry I have no answers for you.)

I think the mushiness you are seeing is just the drying out of the outer pair of leaves as they are being used up to feed the new pair. They will dry out to husks, and only the new pair will remain.

Hi everyone and thank you for your responses! I will continue to watch its progress. Part of my uneasiness is because I have never been successful with keeping this species alive so this is the furthest I've ever kept one alive. Ironically, I do EXTREMELY well with Lithops, but this one eludes me. Hopefully, this will will continue to grow. Thank you again for your input! :)
