What is this black stuff under my attic insulation?

I am doing some work in my attic (with a P100 mask on) and needed to dig down through the insulation in a few spots. Basically, there is a layer of blown cellulose, followed by a layer of faced fiberglass batts (yellow CertainTeed brand), followed by the floor.

I came across what I can only describe as very small piles of shiny black dust/balls:

I looked up pictures of vermiculite and am fairly certain it is not that. The only thing I noticed was that the asphalt-like backing on the batt facing appeared to be deteriorating and it had a similar shiny quality. Could this just be the remnants of that falling off over time? Or something else entirely?
