Usonia-style house with TRULY tiny kitchen needs HELP!
Comments (10)I'm back Houzzers--and thanks for more comments/suggestions. In no particular order, here are answers to questions: (1) 4 people live in this house, (2) we eat together every night possible and also host--at least twice a month--groups of 10-15 other folks (utilizing outdoors as much as possible--I've been known to reschedule an event if rain was probable), (3) budget is solid--willing to go "high end" on elements that are worth the expenditure, and (4) here is what the rest of the living area looks like: (see below) Please note: at some point in the history of ownership of this bungalow, it was decided to put the hot water heater and HVAC system behind those bi-fold doors in the first picture below and wall off the kitchen. This is a typical Usonia-style house with a low pitch roof and thus zero attic space to move either one of these items up there. We're looking into tankless water, etc. The next view is to the right of the wall of windows where sliding doors were added at some point. The last view is the view from the kitchen of the rest of the living area - the full length from the wall where the refrigerator is to the opposite blank wall in 3rd picture is 26ft. The distance from the sliding glass doors in the 2nd picture to the windows in first picture below is 19ft. That constitutes the living area. (All bedrooms are in separate pods off this main space.)...See MoreBig wall, tiny window - need window treatment help!
Comments (17)well, it just depends what you want. if those are real oak floors, you can always have them patched in, but that means the rest of the floor will need refinishing. For sure I'd put in some windows along that wall, and try and have the sink under it. Cabinets. you can do inexpensive or high end. I wouldn't nix the idea of a carpenter custom building some for your space. RTA cabinets are actually decent. hire someone to install. If you're on a budget, I prob wouldn't use HD or Lowes. you're paying them to be the middleman contractor, and they sub out their work. Sometimes their countertops are a decent price though. talk to a kitchen designer or an actual kitchen refinishing company. I found a great one on Yelp (all 5 stars) and they were amazing. I had mine painted, but they also did custom carpentry, refacing, vent hoods, and everything in between. If you could find a company like that, I'd go that route. walk around a stone yard to see what's avail for countertops/islands. Some people like ikea. It just depends the look you want. the rest of the house is very nice. looks like you have plenty of room. don't know why they did such a tiny kitchen with all of that room! however, for 30K, you're going to have to DIY, learn to DIY, or learn how to shop for bargains. I'd still list your current kitchen for sale. someone would want it. they can come in and take it apart and charge 1K for everything. (to demo all of that, you're looking at over 1K anyway! ) hiring a KD for a custom layout design wouldn't be a bad idea...See MoreI have a very odd style house with a flat roof. Needs help!
Comments (4)All black really just looks like a black hole. If you want a dark color, try something softer/warmer - Urbane Bronze is a shade that I have seen used very nicely - and play around with judicious use of contrasting or complimentary color on some trim or surfaces (I do like the dark window frames). Cedar accents really work well with dark to medium grays and dark blues....See MorePls help: Picture moulding odd size windows
Comments (8)They are 9 ft ceilings with no crown on them. I can see how adding vertical lines would make it feel taller, draw your eye up and more board and batten to fit the style of the house. This is the formal dining room off the front door but I’ll be puting my upright piano and a couple of chairs or couch depending on size instead of a table. We have a breakfast nook with extendable table and off that a sunroom screened in that we’ll be putting another table for outdoor dining so we can eat without bugs bothering us....See Moreca_peach
