What else can it be? It doesn't look like root rot.

My poted banana plant has been such a great feature, green, lush and exotic. But five days ago it went into rapid decline. The leaves started drooping and yellowing. Today most were entirely brown, so I cut them off. After some online browsing I was convinced the problem was root rot. I thought I might have accidentally overwatered in winter. I got ready to expose the roots, cut off rotten ones, cut off leaves, resoil and repot. But look at the roots, they seem fine, white and hard, nothing mushy or darkened. Any ideas what else I can try to save my plant?
