Restoring a Wood Burning Fireplace from Gas

Sean E

Hello experts! So here's what we think is the scenario in our newly purchased house (built 1941). At some point we think this was a wood burning fireplace, that then someone converted to gas, that someone then INTENDED on turning back to wood burning. The gas line has been capped, and the electrical has been snipped (a bit of exposed but dead wire is out of frame).

The chimney had a full metal cap sealing the top, so at some point after removing the gas setup somebody just decided to seal the whole thing and be done with it. Previous owners say they tried burning wood once, filled the house with smoke, and that's how they learned there was a sheet metal cap blocking off the chimney top.

Anyways - we decided to get a chimney person in today to take a look and get us ready to burn wood, but he wasn't too helpful. He first removed the metal cap on the chimney, swept it a bit, and then proceeded to tell us we couldn't burn wood in here because the gas didn't look to be properly capped. Picture below... what could be wrong with this cap that would prevent us from burning wood? For various reasons we don't trust this guy too much, but as it stands we now have an exposed chimney, no bird cap, and are under the impression we need to hire a gas company to come take care of something before we can light anything. Thoughts? Thanks so much in advance.
