Need advice about BlueStar 30' Gas Wall Oven and cooktop selectio
Comments (5)My wife and I are renovating a 700 sq. ft. house. We're thinking of a 24" rangetop and a 24" wall oven. In the Washington DC area the BS deealers are an apppliance store and one kitchen designer who doesn't stock anything. Nobody has an oven. We even tried to get a salesman to give us names of customers so we could ask to look at their's but he wouldn't do it. The factory in Reading PA has a showroom with a 30" oven but it's not connected. If you want to talk to them ask for Monique. She's honest and helpful. I'm looking forward to hot broiler to make black and blue steaks with. I've never seen a salamander but it looks so easy to change the rack position. Oven shelves don't give you such a good choice of heights. If I bought their high splash with a shelf it would perch there nicely without using up counter space and my hood may catch the smoke. It bothers me about wall ovens that you can't vent them when you broil. With an electric oven you have to do it with the door open and a lot of greasy smoke goes into the room. Somebody here told me that with these ovens you close the door to broil. I don't know if that improves the smoke or not. I can't comment on char broilers but all I can think of is my house filling up with smoke. I guess you can see what my obsession is. I'll be waiting to see if you get some info here....See MoreNeed help with Oven, Induction+Gas cooktop, and Fridge decisions
Comments (13)You got an excellent bargain on the oven. Do call Gaggenau and see if they'll honor the warranty. Congrats! Mine was FedEx'd from England. I think it was $70 U.S. duty, plus $5 for FedEx to handle the paperwork. Since you'll be carrying yours as luggage, you should be paying (if it hasn't changed) according to the following equation, with the price in U.S. dollars of your cooktop being X: duty=.03(X-800) That should be a lot less than import duty. That is, assuming that there isn't special duty on hand carried electronics or some such. If there's VAT in Germany, ask the store if you can have it waived since you're taking it out of the country. I don't know if you've seen the caveats. For your self-imported cooktop, you should get a letter from your insurance company saying that they know it's European rather than UL approved and that that doesn't affect your policy (mine said so long as it was installed by a licensed electrician). Also, you should make sure your building codes don't specify UL. If they do, you'll need a waiver. The Euro certification is just as good as UL, but you want to make sure that you have all the bases covered so they can't use a technicality to weasel out of the help you'd be given if there's a fire or something (like from a lightning strike). I'm also in California but local codes and inspectors vary. Do check with the airlines about the measurements they allow as well. It should be fine. My cooktop would fit, with its original box, into my old large pullman suitcase. I'm not sure about the newer ones, but it's the three dimensions added together they go by, with a maximum diagonal, so I think that part will be fine. Actually, if you have an old large pullman case, you might consider taking it, with some old towels or rags, and bring home the cooktop in the case, with the cloth for padding, instead of having to get an outer box and peanuts. Worse comes to worst, you can always send it FedEx. :)...See MoreGE Monogram wall oven under Induction Cooktop
Comments (10)Thanks for the response. I understand that you have to have 4" clearance between the two but where the clearance is measured from is what we are unsure of. I don't have the oven yet, so if it's square that question won't matter it will be the same. I'm trying to measure the front of the cabinet where we can't seem to get 4" with a standard cabinet. He is telling me we have a 4" toekick + a 3/4" base + a 28" cutout from the ground up which does not leave 4" to the top of the countertop. He is thinking once installed we would have 4" in between them inside the cabinet if we only have 3 1/4" on the face of the cabinet. I'm thinking the only option is to lower the cabinet base to level with the toekick instead of on top of it. That will give us an extra 3/4 that we need. But that means no overhang on that cabinet. He isn't sure how that will look and wanted me to try and find a picture. If you can, could you see if your oven is sitting on top of the cabinet base that is level with the bottom of all the other cabinets or is sitting lower then the other cabinet bases? Thank you....See MoreDual wall ovens, induction cooktop
Comments (2)I have double wall ovens and a 36 inch induction cooktop and I love this configuration. I don't always have all 5 hobs going, but I sure do appreciate it when I do! LIke this week, when I'm cooking for Thanksgiving. As to induction, I have a Miele and I'm in love with it, but I've rarely heard of anyone who doesn't like what they've chosen, so pick the one that has the features you're looking for and you should be fine. Some folks like an edge, others don't. Mine has a very thin edge that does NOT collect crud but does protect the edge of the glass, which I like. Some of the Bosch units look very nice, and if I was shopping today, i'd take a closer look at them. I wanted turn off timers on each burner, and at the time I was buying, Miele was one of the few choices. Now, many brands have this feature, which I use frequently. I chose Electrolux wave touch ovens. I have found them to be reliable and to work very well, and after rebate they were within my price range. The sensor probe is great, I use it frequently. They generally get good reviews here. I love the pull out ball bearing racks--they're just wonderful. As to shopping, I did my research, made a first and second choice for each item, then laid in wait for the best prices and rebates to come along over about a year and a half period. One day i was just browsing through a sale room and lo and behold, there was a discontinued Miele dishwasher for half off--my first choice machine! I did really well on pretty much everything but the cook top--that never went on sale, but I didn't really expect it to, and I didn't even care. :-) Induction is wonderful, you're going to love it. Best of luck to you, Cj...See More- 4 years agolast modified: 4 years agokeegan_kate thanked Zalco/bring back Sophie!
