Hiding an Outlet in a Bathroom Vanity
Comments (5)It's not against code to install an outlet in a cabinet as long as the outlet remains accessible. And if there's a door or drawer, the outlet is considered accessible. Most times the outlet itself is mounted in the cabinet back itself, and the hair dryer's (or whatever) cord gets plugged into the outlet. With a drawer provisions have to be made so there are no pinch-points for the cord. I'll make a cutout in the drawer back, or I'll shorten the overall length of the drawer, so the drawer back doesn't hit the plug. If the outlet is to be installed on the moving drawer itself so that the outlet moves with the drawer, then the proper cable has to be used to run the electricity out of the wall and to the outlet. Regular romex is not approved for flex situations like this. Even if you use an approved cable, the inspector might nix the installation, or your electrician might not want to do that installation under his ticket. The outlet on the drawer itself just opens itself to trouble, either during installation, during inspection, or down the road liability. That's why 99% of the time the outlet gets installed on the cabinet itself....See Moreelectrical outlets in drawers/cabinets
Comments (4)Mine is in my vanity behind the doors...the only thing is that it could have been alittle bit higher as there is a pull out that interfers with the plug if I wanted to use it with a transformer on the end of it. I am working around it by installing a 36" extension cord. This allows me to use it just fine. I like it to be able to put my electric toothbrush off the counter top. I also keep rechargable candles plugged in there....See Moreoutlets behind cabinets - when should plug get wired?
Comments (4)Have your installer cut out ONLY as big as the rough in box, (these cutouts need to be quite accurate). The electrician can then wire and install the receptacle and cover. Depending on the thickness of your cabinet backs, and any distance away from drywall, box extensions may be necessary. Your electrician, and or inspector if you have one will know if the extensions are required. edit to add: One issue with installing the device before cabinets, is the cabinet installer then needs to remove both screws, and pull the receptacle, (or switch) out through the cabinet back so the "ears" of the device sit over the back material. IMO it's easier for the installer to not have to do this, and let the electrician do it correctly, where he may need longer screws (as well as the aforementioned extensions) This post was edited by ctycdm on Tue, Nov 12, 13 at 16:31...See Morebathroom vanity drawer plug
Comments (4)A moving outlet in a drawer is an invitation for wires deteriorating or getting pinched/broken over time, as well as for a fire if you forget and leave a heat-producing appliance in the on position and have it enclosed. I see similar problems for a wall-mounted outlet behind the drawer with a plugged in cord moving back and forth. There are good reasons why this is not allowed by code in many localities. It might sound cool, but I consider it a hazardous solution to a non-problem....See Moregirl_wonder
