electrical outlets in drawers/cabinets

Several of you have mentioned having an el. outlet inside your cabinet or drawer for hairdryer/el. toothbrush etc. thus keeping counter clear. Could you explain the set up or post a photo - thanks

It's just a normal wall outlet but placed behind the vanity.
As far as I know nothing special was done. This was such a wonderful idea (borrowed from CdeL during her kitchen remodel in 02-03). DH also put a wall plug (about half way up the wall)in a bathroom closet. I have a cordless phone recharger, broom vac and my radio/CD player plugged into it.

Mine is in my vanity behind the doors...the only thing is that it could have been alittle bit higher as there is a pull out that interfers with the plug if I wanted to use it with a transformer on the end of it. I am working around it by installing a 36" extension cord. This allows me to use it just fine. I like it to be able to put my electric toothbrush off the counter top. I also keep rechargable candles plugged in there.

We are in the process of planning a remodel of a tiny bathroom too. We decided to put a small shelving unit next to the medicine cabinet that would have space for the toothbrush charger and the electrical outlet inside. See the link for a picture of what we have in mind. I think it will need to be open on two sides, front and medicine cabinet side, so "L" shaped. That will accomodate the dryer or iron cord when it is in use. The picture shows a conventional type cabinet, open on the front side. We have some water damage so need to spend carefully and a pricey medicine cabinet is not in the cards. This is contemporary so maybe not your look. The most common solution for upper under-cabinet outlets is called "Plugmold", and made by Wiremold. Home Depot carries it. Every electrical house in the country carries them. it's essentially a flat metal "tube" or "raceway" with outlets every 6 inches or every 12 inches. You bolt them to the underside of the kitchen cabinets, or to the wall under the cabinets. There are other brands of "raceway with outlets," but they're not as easy to find. They are not RECESSED, however. I don't know about the recessed version. Recessed into the wall, or recessed into the cabinets? I don't think I'd want to recess into the cabinets as a stand-alone outlet, bcs you need a metal casing, and some space, etc.

I think you could make one of the door switches work with a vanity door, but I've never seen one that was rated for more than 10 amps. To activate power for a GFCI receptacle you need to be able to switch a minimum of 15 amps, and preferably 20 amps. Another option may be to use a 20 amp 120 volt A/C relay that is activated by a low voltage switch in the door frame. Remcon sells a closet light relay with low voltage switch, but its only rated for 6.5 amps. I'm sure they are available for higher amperage for special uses, but its not something you will find at HD or Lowes. Bruce

In that case, you can try to move or get rid of the switch altogether. Depending on the length of the wires, you might be able to move it to the other side of cabinet. Or if you don't want/need the switch, then you could join the cables in a junction box and put a blank cover plate on it. That box/plate could be inside the cabinet at the top if you didn't want it to be very noticeable, but the junction box needs to remain accessible. You can't bury it behind drywall.

Here's mine. The outlet is in the drawer and connects to another outlet in the wall behind the cabinet. It is well worth the small extra expense.
