What to use to clean marble/stone prior to sealing?

Comments (9)The best thing to do is get a sample. I did some testing with some of the common dark green "marbles", Verde Guatemala and its relatives. I found it satisfactory for most stains. It did scratch fairly easily which is worse on the dark shiny green stuff (the lighter samples didn't really show it even though they'd scratch too). On the other hand, I could sand it to a lovely honed look myself with very little effort, so it would have been great to care for in a honed finish. Oil did leave marks. Oiling the honed stuff like soapstone looked like soapstone but better...my samples weren't sealed and I suspect sealing would help with the oil. Unetchable and unstainable with kitchen stuff. ANYWAY...every stone is different, even within the same family and the same named type. All I can say is don't rule it out because nobody uses it. Get a chunk and put it through the tests. I think it'll perform better than marble....See MoreCoral Beach, is it a travertine, marble? Another name?
Comments (2)We recently installed Coral Peach trav in our hall bathroom (floor tile). Ours is honed. If what you're looking at is the same thing (or similar)--it IS gorgeous! Don't know how it would hold up as a counter material (I try to be VERY careful when using TB cleaner and have switched to a stone-friendly disinfecting cleaner for the tub, sink, etc. in order to avoid etch marks/splotches)....See MoreI.D. of the stone in this 13 inch charger? Comments (12)Thanks. She is gorgeous, isn't she? I live in Savannah (hence the svh on my screen name) where I work as a tour guide in the Downtown Historic District and have a part time retail job on top of that. (When you work in tourism, you ALWAYS need more than one job). A cat is a terrific companion for the odd-hours lifestyle I lead. I get my items at local antique mall/thrift shops. I got the table at one of those shops (which has since gone out of busines) for only $35. (Closing sale) The owner said it was Depression era....See MoreDebbi Washburn
