Please Help! Need pics of stone fireplaces!
Comments (10)These are just lovely. I am thinking I may have screwed up with my fireplace. I didnt want it. The best wall for it would obstruct the view out back. I wanted my view... gosh darn it. So, I tried to compromise, since I have everything else that I wanted, so I said, okay, but I want as LLAAAAARGE of windows as I can get on each side. So that is what I got - Big Windows, Small Fireplace. Now, the fireplace is gorgeous and cozy. And I still have my windows for a view on a snowy day, watching the fire and the birds feeding..... but I wont have much room for stone on the side. Which might work out, that is yet to be seen. I went ahead and lowered the ceiling from 2 story back down to 9 ft in order to get another room above, so maybe it will look okay since it is a shorter ceiling? (deep sigh) I hope so. Maybe I should be thinking tile instead of stone, but we already have the stone leftover from the exterior, and maybe it shouldnt go all the way up, just mantle height... (another deep sigh) Might have to start a new thread here before too long....See MoreNeed advice on refacing huge stone fireplace
Comments (4)You can do it the way you suggest although it may be difficult to attach the plywood (near the firebox opening you can use cement board which meets the code requirements for non-combusitble materials). However, I would suggest that you use mortar, and trowel it on in a sufficient quantity so that it fills up the irregularities and mortar joints and you end up with a reasonably smooth surface. You may have to do it in two coats - first partially filling in the recesses and then a finish coat - the reason is that otherwise a thick coat may sag before it dries. Then you will end up with a surface that is perfect for adhering stone or ceramic tiles to (and it won't stick out into the room as far as a plywood overlay), or even dry wall if you use lead or plastic anchors. This assumes that the existing stone has not been coated with something that will cause the mortar not to stick. If it has, you can use fortified thinset mortar, although it is messier to work with. Hope this helps. Also, since it's 15 feet high you will need a sturdy ladder or even scaffolding (cheap to rent) since the mortar is heavy and you need leverage to apply it....See MoreFaux stone fireplace surround needs an update. Comments (4)Hi jbella- not what you asked so take this with a grain of salt … would you consider removing the mantel? I’m no pro, but my first impression seeing your room is a lot of dark lines. The crown, baseboard and mantel. I kinda wonder if it’d look prettier without the mantel (though, in general, I do like that style mantel.)...See MoreUser
