My guess is that your photo was at the Oklahoma-Texas border on interstate 40. Wheeler is a Texas county. When they let you out, you do wander from home.

Schoolhouse - I sure hope not. I don't know if you have them around you but they are turkey vultures and they certainly have unattractive heads. The only larger raptors are eagles and condors. This one flew over my head to land on my neighbor's roof and it was eerie watching his shadow close in on me.

Once when we were kids my dad was carving the turkey to put on a platter, and a couple of us kids were waiting to try to grab a piece. He shooed us away saying "You're hovering around like vultures. You're a bunch of turkey vultures."

Yes, we have the vultures. In fact there is a stretch of road not far from me that seems to be a gathering place for them. The road is between two farm pastures and then through a stand of woods. I don't know if they have a roost there or what, but I've seen the birds in that spot for years. There plus hovering over the countryside and my house looking for something to scavenge. I've never seen a nest tho.
