I made candied sweet potatoes with marshmallows for the first time last Thanksgiving, and they were the first thing gone! I was surprised as I don't like them.

I do like mashed sweet potatoes with lots of butter, cream and some spices .

I don't care for sweet potatoes or yams but I have always made them with brown sugar and topped with marshmallows. It's what everyone expects and seems to like.

Mother used to stuff orange halves with sweet potatoes and I so loved them that way.

We have no sweet potato eaters in our family. We don't always make Thanksgiving dinner but when we do and did, sweet potatoes aren't on the menu. When we attend someone else's Thanksgiving dinner, there's often sweet potato something but not always. Because I don't eat it, I don't recall how I've seen them prepared.

You could do marshmallows on half of it. I like to stripe mine with almonds.

I make my sweet potato casserole with a pecan praline topping. I never really cared for the marshmallows.

We will have baked sweet potatoes with an optional topping of sour cream mixed with a touch of maple syrup and chopped jalapenos.

I like sweet potato casserole but always make it with the pecans praline topping, but I sure would eat it with the marshmallows too. Most of the time I make the candied sweet potatoes for the family, but I do not put marshmallows on them. I also like them baked with just butter on them or I like them fried with butter and brown sugar.

I use to like them with apples and maple syrup but my family doesn't like them at all so I make butternut squash instead (they don't much like that either, but I do.

I love sweet potatoes but only with a bit of butter. My preferred method is baked so that I can enjoy the skins, too. I think that the typical SP casserole is just a vehicle for the melted marshmallows and sugar.

The usual T-day feast is loaded with starches.....sweet potatoes just don't seem to go with everything else, to my tastebuds' opinion. I have them baked or mashed several times a year, they are also good raw!

That said, a marshmallowy casserole will be on the buffet at my house. One of my wonderful neighbors makes it every year for our communal dinner and it is always a favorite.

My mother made them with pineapple rings and brown sugar on the bottom, then the sweet potatoes (actually, for her it was canned yams) and topped with marshmallows. So that how I make them. I like the contrast, the tartness of pineapple and the sweetness of marshmallow.

I had a girlfriend who brought real sweet potatoes topped with the pecan praline mixture ... oh! that was wonderful! But when I tried to do that the next year, my family cried FOUL! They wanted their marshmallows. And, like you, I obliged.

DH loves the marshmallows. We are guests this year, so I am not cooking. So, today I am making him the yam casserole as I am sure it won't be sure where we are going.

I try "not" to add sugar to my dishes. No marmalade on my chicken. No honey on my ham. I like to separate my sweet and savory, no mixing them. I like butter, salt and pepper on things like yams...oatmeal...avocados.

I like doing stripes of praline or nuts with the marshmallows so people can choose which (or both!) Something like this:

I don't care for the overly sweet casseroles either but if that's what your grandson likes, I say go for it!!

My preference is for the yams or sweet potatoes mashed with S&P, a bit of butter and plenty of fresh goat cheese mixed in. There is something very magical in the sweetness of the potatoes mixed with the tangy tartness of the cheese - it's delicious!! Or just oven roasted with EVOO and some seasonings.

Mother was a wonderful cook and I always enjoyed her orange cups with sweet potatoes. Never overloaded with marshmallows. Not hers but picture is close to ones she prepared.

We've never had sweet potatoes with any of our holiday meals. I guess someone way back didn't like them and they were skipped in the family traditions. Last year, I made a kale salad topped with sweet potatoes chunks that had been roasted with salt, pepper and olive oil. I would say about three-fourths of it was eaten, so I consider that a success. Nobody asked me for the recipe, though, so maybe people were just being polite.

Marshmallows aren’t my thing, but if my grand-kid asked for them I would make them. Lots of people don’t like pecans or cooked nuts, my DH is one. Yes, perhaps you can figure out how to make two smaller versions or just enjoy the sweetness. Thanksgiving is about the only time I have sweet sweet potatoes. I usually just have one baked and add some butter and cinnamon.

I am trying out a second sweet potato dish. It's chipotle smashed sweet potatoes with cream, chipotles in adobo sauce, butter and maple syrup. Kind of a sweet/spicy/savory thing. It's an Ina Garten recipe so hopefully it will be good!

outside, I also don't like pecans or praline. You'd think I'm a picky eater with limited preferences but I'm not. It's just that typical Thanksgiving dishes hit most of my "don't like" list. Don't start talking about pumpkin anything, also on the list.

I bake my sweet potatoes (I choose those with dark red flesh as they have a deeper flavor) cut into chunks and make a mixture of butter, some molasses, brown sugar, chopped candied ginger and some cinnamon and a dust of cardamom to pour over the top and bake. It has always been popular. Mini marshmallows wouldn't make much of a taste difference. Pecans would be good.

I would prefer to have the pecans and/or praline, but if a guest wants marshmallows, I would serve them - just not to everyone. I like the idea of having half marshmallow and half praline, but I still consider this dish a dessert and not something I would eat during a main meal. If others want it, I would accommodate them - I like to please guests. Most of the rest of the year I please myself.

Sweet potato casserole has always been served as main dish, in my family, and growing up. Never thought of it as a dessert. I DO love sweet potato pie :o) as a dessert just not served at the same meal with the casserole.

I prefer baked sweet potatoes with a little butter, lemon, salt and pepper. Have never cared for any of the sweet toppings. Pretty sure, though, that I would serve whatever topping grandkids requested!

I used to like sweet potato casserole, marshmallows n all...but the older I get the less I like how sweet it is. For many years now I just bake sweet potatoes and serve them as is with Thanksgiving dinner.

That's the way my daughter makes them, I just eat a little because its like dessert. I'll miss her this year glenda because shes in your neck of the woods.

When I asked my little fella, he said he wanted turkey, rolls, and pie. That was it. And that's what he'll get from me. We also have reservations for our favorite brunch place this weekend, so there will be more spoiling. It's fun to spoil them ain't it?

The casserole is far sweeter than the pie. I wonder how the dish ever came to be, it's interesting. It's certainly not what anyone could call normal fare.

My recipe for sweet potato pudding contains cider, butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and salt. I'd prefer to reserve the sweets for dessert.

Guess it's a southern thing, as you never see sweet potato casserole in restaurants served as a dessert. Just always as a side along with all the other veggie side dishes. Yes, sweet potato pie as a dessert, though.

I just can't eat sweet potatoes. They are weird. i don't even like cooking them. They make such a mess. My sister handles all sweet potato related things. I don't remember if she tops her casserole with marshmallows or not....

I served this several years and all enjoyed.

Baked Sweet Potatoes with maple-jalapeno sour cream

Rub oil and salt on 4 scrubbed, sweet potatoes and dried
Place on rack and take 450 for 40-45 minutes or until soft (I wrap mine in foil)

Topping
Combine
1/2 c sour cream
1 Tbl maple syrup
2 tsp seeded and minced jalapeno ***I use canned minced green chiles, drained
1 tsp lime juice
salt and tobasco to taste
chill

Serve potatoes with:
maple-jalapeno sour cream
bacon bits
sliced scallions
