Comments (11)I haven't found a dinette set That Ive liked that I thought would fit the space. And my dining set is the problem. Its a larger, 8 seated mahogany square table. Beautiful- seats all 4 children and adults (and if we want to have grandma and grandpa!)- but BIG. And in the dining room that is 9*10- tight squeeze. That's why I had wanted to knock down my wall. But I really am intrigued by the idea of getting rid of the built in desk/pantry. I wont be able to fit my table in there, but if I could get a dinette in there- I could take out a leaf of the dining room table, making it a bit more manageable. Before we purchased this house, we rented a beautiful home that had a very large dining room that allowed us to have both the table and the buffet. I put the buffet in the kitchen (as you see pictured) and use it as a coffee nook for now. And the mudroom/laundry room which is nicely finished could always use some cabinets! I could turn that pantry into a coat closet... Hhmmmmmmm. I am really loving the idea of cream cabinets and a chocolate subway tile backsplash. The attached picture is where I think I am going to go with this. I got it from a local cabinet refinisher (after 2 contractors turned me down- boo!) who is giving me a quote- they are initially estimating 5k for a complete refinish (including changing out the hinges to European hinges and hardware). I cant tell if its worth doing myself for less (if even possible) or giving them the money and you know, having a momentary break. Thank you so much for the ideas. Between full time mommy of a small army and still unpacking- this has been so helpful!...See Morekitchen design questions
Comments (42)Hi, Charmar I only asked because that's where your mindset seemed to be based on your responses. If you have a large, tall window centered on the wall and the ceiling peak, it makes sense from an aesthetic point of view to place the sink centered on that wall. There's nothing wrong with symmetry if the overall function of the kitchen works for you. Do you have any inspiration pictures for how you want the kitchen to look and feel? The kitchen below is a mirror image of your most recent layout sketch and Lisa_A's layout from 3/6/18 at 9:38 am. This kitchen is light and airy with the absence of upper cabinets and a table instead of an island. Your kitchen will have a more traditional feel. If you're not putting a prep sink in the island, then your sink and stove are not too far apart. Imho, your stove is too far from the refrigerator, but it may not be an issue for you....See MoreKitchen design question
Comments (12)The goals for me would be ability to have a hood w exterior venting for the range/ Decent storage maybe deeper counters / as much reduction in cross crossing foot traffic as possible / less emphasis on ikitchen seating since dining room is there/ nice surfaces but hard wearing and mid price points for most of this . I would want to work w dining room to alleviate any orphaned status in other words save money to decorate or upgrade seating / lighting / storage/ maybe secondary wet bar there. Skooch range away from fridge. 4 or 6 inches from that corner is a fine range position . When cooking the short side of L counter becomes the cooks zone and w traffic in your space this will help ....and more counter then between fridge and range....See MoreKitchen Design Question
Comments (20)We'd really like to help, but first we need more information... Please post a fully-measured layout of the space under consideration and a sketch of the entire floor. Both can be either hand-drawn, computer generated, or drawn up with computer/app tools. By "fully-measured", we mean a layout with the widths of each wall/window/door/doorway and the distances between each wall/window/door/doorway labeled. See a sample below. If something cannot be moved or changed, label it precisely on your layout (see post in sample) and tell us why it cannot be moved/changed -- we may have some ideas for you. The sketch of the entire floor lets us see how the Kitchen relates to the rest of the home. It doesn't have to be to-scale, but it should accurately show how the rooms relate to each other and should include all interior & exterior doors. In addition, it will help us see how traffic flows in, around, and through the Kitchen. Label the front entry and family entry. The family entry is usually a garage or side entry, but it might not be. It's helpful to know which door you use to bring in groceries. Regardless of how you draw it up (by hand, computer, etc.), please be sure all measurements are labeled. (Note: Computer generated layouts often lack key measurements and, sometimes, measure to/from things like the middle of a wall or the middle of a window. Neither are useful. Measure each item and the distances between each item.) Other questions... Tell us about you and your family and how you plan to use your Kitchen. All-adults? Empty Nesters? Children (now or in the future)? What appliances (& their sizes) do you plan to have? Where are you flexible? Can walls/windows/doors/doorways change (move, change size, add, delete)? Do you have a basement under the Kitchen or are you on a slab? The above and more are discussed in the Layout Help FAQ.
