I have an old jigsaw with a worn blade and could have done infinitely better.

Carla - when you spend so much on cabinets and installation, I'm hoping "we'll just caulk it" isn't the answer I get from the cabinet company.

Two things---what is with the raw plywood in the first photo?

Why did you wait until after the counter tops were installed to worry about the sink installation?

The sloppy sink install should have been fixed BEFORE the counters went in.

ci_lantro - Got it. Thanks. They did the install the same day and unfortunately I had to be at work that day. Regardless, not very helpful comment. The Plywood is under the slab. There is also plywood in the alcove where the dishwasher will go.

Sammy - I don't see the ultimate fix in the thread. All I see is a horrible half octagon-like trim around the sink. is that what you are talking about? or is there something I couldn't find?

Scroll down in the thread to the OP's post of May 15, 2017 where Kat updated the thread with her resolution. They added a drawer head that was scribed correctly around the sink.

The reason that a lot of people prefer to go with the Kohler Whitehaven is that precise scribing is not needed around the apron. Wilson - we looked at the Kohler. It was shallower and about $400 more, so we went with this one. I've had a similar sink in the past and my previous installer had no problem doing it well.

This is why it’s a $600 extra from my installer to do a sink like that. It takes the better part of a day to make a proper template, then transfer it to the cabinet, and then cut it out and mount the sink. Not everyone has the skill. Which is why the Whitehaven slipcover sinks have made huge inroads into the wonky, unlevel, no two are alike, fireclay sinks.

The cabinet company is correct. Remove that sink and purchase the 36" model please. Switching will probably eliminate that horrible "repair" at each bottom end of the countertop cutout too.

The fillers need to be replaced. Easy fix.

The bigger problem is the plywood showing under the countertop.

Joseph Corlett is correct. Your cabinet people do not seem experienced with these type sinks.

Looking more closely I see that now. Maybe a false front to match the width of the lower doors cut for the sink better.

When choosing a sink like this, it has a high cost, no matter what. You choose where to spend your money. You spend it on product or labor. You choose a more expensive and easier to install sink choice like the Whitehaven, or ”handmade individual sizing” that takes top tiered expensive labor to have the skills needed to install.

What you don’t do is choose the cheap wonky sink, and the cheap wonky labor, both.

@mackdolan your comment makes no sense. I would never choose the whitehaven sink because it's easier to install (I hate the off center drain, the depth and the price tag). People get farmhouse sinks installed by professionals all the time, you are really reaching here with your comments not knowing this person at all.

You seem to have missed that she chose the cheap wonky sink because it was $400 less. Not understanding that the proper install of a cheap sink costs more than $400. In this case, “saving” $400 is costing a heck of a lot more. Like 10x more. Because the install was acceptable enough to put stone on top of. You don’t get to “fix” that with anything but a much more expensive finish carpenter to create a template and scribe a drawer front. You don’t pull it out and start over.

So what if it was $400 less than the almighty whitehaven. I didn't miss that part. That doesn't make it a cheap wonky sink. I know many who have this same sink installed correctly in the same size cabinet, which is why I chose it as well. And how does any type of sink force a professional to cut a cabinet that way? There is no excuse for that. They should have come to her and pointed out her "cheap wonky sink" before they cut it. There is a template, that they obviously didn't use.

I’ve seen worse when dealing with fire clay. Usually from builders. Templates are useless with fireclay. Each one is a different size, and they often have pretty out of level or out of square bottoms, rims, and pooling in the interior. And it chips. It takes a lot more skill than was displayed to handle them. That skill comes at a higher cost premium than $400. It was a false economy to “save $400”. Future posters can learn from this.

Yes it says that in the company's notes within the instructions, that is obvious with fireclay. They provide great instructions. This is a hack job and not even close, any DIYer could have done it better.

@mackdolan - the sink is a well made sink which is not "wonky" in the least. Not only was the Kohler more expensive, it is shallow and the ratio between height and width looks very odd to me. It is long and narrow, and in my opinion, a farmhouse sink should look deep. In addition, the cost of it has nothing to do with how this contractor cut the opening. Did you even look at how jagged those cuts are. This contractor claimed to be a carpenter/custom cabinet maker. I, a DIYer, could easily have taken out my jigsaw and cut a straight line with a curve at the base. There is absolutely no excuse for the hacked up cabinet. I called to complain and the owner of the company told me that they cut the sink that way, because they planned to put trim over it. We never discussed putting trim around the sink. And even if we had, who would intentionally make a cut like that.

@itsourcasa - can you send me photos of your install, so I can show my contractor how it's supposed to be done. I'd really appreciate it.

That is so not a template. And yes, it’s wonky and each one is differently sized. That’s how fireclay as a material works. Firing it in a kiln causes it to warp. You may not notice. But a true pro will. Dealt with it more times than you e ever even thought about renovating your kitchen. It’s why there is a big labor upcharge to deal with them. $800 from my best guy. Who is the only one allowed to touch fireclay.

I noticed that it was very level and balance. I had it in the floor and checked it's dimensions with a level and tape well in advance. You have no idea about the situation, so don't assume. The purpose of this thread was to get help, not criticism. if that is all you have to offer, you are useless.

I traced it out and offered a template. They said, don't worry, we got it.

@mackdolan - oh, and if you look at the sink itself, just take a look at the right side, it is a nice clean line, not wonky in the least. Do you see how easy it would be to cut.

@demill66 there is no comparison, the latoscana fireclay you got is way more appealing. You don't have to justify it. I did a lot of research on both the quality and install. We don't have ours installed yet but my GC and his guys have done many like this.

I have a 30" sink installed in a 30" cabinet. Jospeh is correct.

Sure, you can hack a 33" sink into a 33" cabinet. I'd imagine you'd void your base cabinet and sink warranty also. Most competent designers, contractors, and cabinet makers/suppliers would simply refer to the manufacturers specs...

@cpartist i'm glad you like the look of that, I personally (in addition to the recommendation of the cabinet being 3" bigger than the sink) like the look of a 33" sink in a 36" cabinet. It's not wrong.

I think that as long as the farm sink is the same width as the doors below it will look correct and balanced. It doesn't matter if it is fireclay or a Whitehaven. Here's a few examples with overlay and inset doors. Personally I would not want my sink to be narrower than the doors as shown in the last three photos. They just look off to me.
