IKEA Kitchen with Custom Panels Install Questions

Hello,

We are currently installing IKEA ktichen boxes and we are going to order custom matte thermofoil fronts and panels. I have a few questions:

1) The floor isn't level but the cabinets are installed level. We may have leveled the cabinets too high.
Our toe kick space is 4.5" at the low, and it is 5.25" at the high. In hindsight I realize we maybe should have gone from 4.5" at the high to 3.75" at the low. I'm not sure if this matters but I wanted to check, since now is the time to fix it. My concern isn't counter top height its the toe kick looking too big.

2) We have an integrated dishwasher and a skinny 24" integrated fridge. The dishwasher is beside our Bertazonni stove so we will need a panel between the dishwasher and stove to support the counter top. I like the look of no panel beside the stove because I think it showcases the stove more and it makes the stove feet pop. But I need a panel. Can I just add a notch to this panel that the toe kick will run in front of? It would give me a panel to support the countertop, but it would also be notched back to allow for the feet to be more prominent. Haven't seen this done in any photos I've seen (it's either a full panel or no panel).

3) We have a built in range hood. Is it standard to use the same thermofoil material as the door fronts to clad the hood?

One thing to consider with your counter height is that ranges only have a little bit of play for leveling. If your cabinets are significantly higher than standard, your range will sit lower. And, if it’s one that has a lip that normally rests on top of the counter, you’re really screwed.

That’s the bigger issue, not whether the toe kick will look off.

You can not have a range next to a tall cabinet panel. Especially thermofoil. It will scorch and bubble brown. It violates fire code clearances. You need a minimum of 6” of horizontal clearance.

Hello - I am partially there with my ikea kitchen install but had a couple of questions: - should the side cover panels just be used for the end of a cabinet run - or am I supposed to use them between cabinets if the cabinets are different sizes (I have a 30' long cab adjacent to a 40' long one so the last 10" of the 40" shows - is there supposed to be a cover panel between these two?) I'm sure its somewhat subjective but just wondering what the "normal" way to install these is. Also, if I do put a cover panel between those two top cabinets, then I assume I also have to slide one between the two base cabinets underneath to keep the spacing the same - but I don't know if it would be weird to have a side panel between two base cabinets of the same size - and maybe that is a reason to skip it on top? - the top cabinets are about 1 inch from the ceiling. the guy doing the install told me that when the doors go on they can be slightly dropped so there is a thin edge of the top frame available to attach a thin crown molding to that would cover the gap between cabinets and ceiling. he said this will be better than using the ikea deco strips because my ceiling is uneven. does this sound right? - for lighting that is going under the top cabinets -- where do the transformers go - behind the top cabinets? there seems to be enough space there, but not sure if there is somewhere else they are supposed to go. For support around the fridge, it'll be attached in part to the appliance garage as in the diagram, and I can add a bracket for support if needed (I am adding a shelf, as I mentioned in my first post, which will help support). I feel like the concerns about whether appliances, cabinets will be able to open should be quashed: Fridge doors are absolutely fine to clear all walls, all appliances are completely fine, my counter fabricator will not build a counter that will get in the way of the cabinets, my contractor will not install a cabinet I cannot open, etc. etc. And the kitchen is mostly installed except for filler pieces and countertops (which haven't been ordered yet). To your comment about the pieces: Filler pieces are only *supposed* to be aesthetic, aren't they? So to try to find examples a little more that might illustrate: If I look very closely at my dream/inspiration kitchen here on Houzz, I see an example of my cabinet situation. It looks like half fillers, though ending *above* the counters. This also shows the cabinet door alignment I was afraid of losing with a full filler piece.On the other question about the refrigerator, you might be right that that should have a full panel, for the visual separation. This might be a good example, don't you think? Also shows I could go with a filler on only one side and still maintain the built-in look, perhaps?

Hi All, I've used Ikea Akurum for my kitchen and 3 of my bathrooms. Love them all. Finally doing my last bathroom and now it's Sektion. I have successfully hacked the cabinets to make them floating but am wanting to use the Sektion Ekestad 36x96 cover panel as a counter top. The top would be 50x22. It's the guest bathroom and it won't get much use. I will probably spray some clear enamel on it for protection and I also have a good exhaust fan in there. However, I have family who visit for weeks at a time. Do you think it will stand up to the moisture?

If the fronts and glides are specifically made for Ikea cabs, there should be no difference in installing them as Ikea's own parts. So, go to the Ikea website and find your drawer, low, medium or high. scroll down to "assembly instructions" and click on the choices. Below two Pdfs for medium drawers. (Look through both booklets from front to back , as everything depends on where in the stack the drawer is going to be installed, if it's going to be an inside drawer or regular outside drawer etc. It helps to understand the system, before starting to assemble. Range height is okay - manual says it goes up to 37".

It isn't a tall cabinet panel. The dishwasher is by the stove, not the fridge.

We did what you are considering with a cover panel to help support the countertop between our dishwasher and apron front sink; we notched out the bottom and ran toe kick in front of it. If you put a cover panel between your DW and stove (notched out or not), I would also put one on the other side of the stove or the DW so it looks symmetrical and "planned".

Hillside House has a good point about countertop heights. I would measure very carefully to see that your countertops won't end up higher than 37" There is a gap of about 1/4 inch between the top of the cabinet and the countertop to take into account. It may very well be fine, but as you said, now is the time to be sure. Also check your dishwasher specs. I thought I had our measurements planned down to the fraction of an inch with our Ikea cabinets, but our countertops still ended up being 1/4-1/2 inch high than I expected, though that worked out well for us.

Yes we will do a panel on the other side of the stove as well.

Stove is actually good for 37.5", but counter top shouldn't wind up being more than 36.75" at the most.

My work has a new kitchen an all the toe kicks are 5.5" with a 37" counter top height and I think everything looks normal and acceptable, so I don't think having a slightly larger toe kick is noticeable.
