What to do with narrow hallway, high ceilings & only 1 light fixture?

I have a hallway that is 18'10" long and 33" wide with 10 ft. ceilings. There is only 1 flush mount fixture in the middle. I don't mind painting but this is a rental so ideas like recessed lighting cannot work. I've lived here for almost 8 years though and the landlord is relatively lax so I can get basic work done. The second section of the hallway past that African print is pretty small, 8'6" from the threshold to the radiator. I do have plans for it though. Maybe a mirror on the wall above the radiator, a fancy rug/textile/prints on the wall and some low light plants on corner shelving above a tall vase with reeds that will replace the mirror area. I also will likely replace the African print with a curtain to block sound (my bedroom is right there). I'm open to eclectic, minimal with pops of color or really anything that looks better than the current state

Hi there,

How about a colorful runner rug down the hallway? You can bring interest to the space without it being permanent. Rugsdirect.com has thousands of choices. An alternative (or addition) to that idea is to create a gallery wall down the length of the wall. Hard to tell what is on the wall to the right in the first picture (an electrical panel?), but if you can fit a framed photo over that you have a lot of real estate to do something really fun on that wall. If you do decide on a gallery wall, I'd suggest painting the walls a brighter white. Perhaps they already are, just hard to tell from the photos and maybe it's the flushmount that gives them a yellow appearance. Then I would get frames all in the same color, but varying sizes. Hope you find something that works!

If you want to improve lighting maybe you can get the ok from landlord to replace the light yourself, or you pay someone to do it, a handyman. You would have to leave it if you move out and not expect landlord to reimburse you for it.

How about track lighting to highlight the fireplace? I would place the recessed lights ~ 30 inches away from the wall in a pattern. 4" recessed can lighting may be nicer. Are you considering LEDs?

A lighting alternative would be to add a crown and recess cove lighting...it can go a bit lower on the wall as your head is typically down the center of the hall, not on the edges. I was also thinking of the old lighting fixtures they used in offices a lot which was a fluorescent that was mounted to the wall behind a finished board that allowed the light to shine both up and down, but not across. Or maybe you can find some wall art that provides light too. I have the same hall way, so really loved everyone's ideas! I have thought about clearing out a closet on one wall, removing the doors and putting a sleeping closet in there that stays open to the hallway to give it more width. It would only be cot sized because of the depth possibly with book shelves and a light looking like one of those European wall niches with a bed. Because I love rustic, I would layer it with a collection of wool blankets, fun pillows and maybe a pictures and/or old postcards. I have lots of guest and a child could sleep on the cot. Now, to figure out what to do with what is in the closet! What do you think of that idea? My hallway is actually the same color. I've also been thinking of running a 2 pieces of wood down the hall apart enough to hang pictures between them in an effort to make a more tidy gallery, but fear it would lengthen and skinny up the look of the hallway. this is a very easy fix get a track light with a few heads of a multie head directional light, lowes and home depo sell both for a pretty good price, also amazon and online dealer. it would come with max wattage bulbs so buy a second set of bulbs for it in lower wattage.
