How do I remove this drain part?

I have removed a one-piece three-wall-plus-pan (acrylic?) shower insert. I had to tear it into bits to remove it from the drain because I can't figure out how to remove the drain from the waste plumbing below it. There *is* a huge pvc hex nut underneath it, that I assume tightened up the drain to the shower, but it's bigger than any wrench I have and almost inaccessible. The house was built in 1997.

Anyone familiar with this design and can tell me what to do next?

Call the plumber. And the tile pro. You need professionals if you lack the tools to address the problem.

The nut you speak of probably does clamp the drain to the bottom of the shower. Don't worry about that since the shower is now missing! The drain looks to be plastic which means that, likely the drain body has been glued into the abs drain piping below; you will need to cut it out. But, before cutting have a plan in place, in other words, have things completely figured out as to what parts you will buy (have them bought and in your hands for examination!) and how you will reassemble the shower drain. That way you can make judicious cuts and minimize what further repair work you have to do to the subfloor plumbing. If you are planning to reinstall another acrylic/fiberglass enclosure, you may want to use what I did installing our showers. The link below shows the drains I used. Look at section 2 and you will see a rubber gasket that is driven downward around the drain pipe between the drain pipe and shower drain. To install to a shower, the drain pipe is left extending up above the subfloor an appropriate distance. Then, the drain is installed onto the bottom of the shower and the shower unit placed into the alcove and over the drain pipe. Then from above, the rubber gasket is driven into place. Simple, easy and it works! There are other similar drains suitable for tile installations as well.

The drain unscrews from the assembly below the tub. Normally the drain and overflow are all one assembly. If you have access to the back/underside of the tub it's a lot easier, because you can control both the drain basket from the top and the nut that captures the threads on the basket from below. However, you can try to replace the basket just using access from above. Easiest way is with a tool called a "basket wrench": An inexpensive basket wrench costs maybe $5 to $10 at a hardware store. You can see how this would lock on to the cross pieces in the basket and allow you to rotate the basket counterclockwise to unthread it. Or you can use the standard DIY method which is to insert two sturdy screwdrivers into the basket, one at the 9 o'clock position and one in the 3 o'clock position, and cross the screwdrivers and use that leverage to rotate the basket. Once the basket is removed, clean the tub surface and install a new basket using a bead of plumbers putty. I will say that the proper way, and the best way, is to have access from below. It's best to set the basket into the putty and then secure it by rotating the nut from below instead of rotating the basket from above.

You can try Borax and/or baking soda. Mix it up with water to make it paste like. But you should try to figure out what is causing the odor. Remove the drain cover strainer and look down the drain to see if there are hair or scum deposits or even mold. If you see lots of buildup, you can try mechanically knocking it off so it will go down the drain or lifted out. Many times the problem is close to the top of the drain. The problem with drains is that they do accumulate buildups. It may end up where the only way to get rid of the problem is to use something toxic and smelly. In theory, your entire pipe may have crud around the inside. You can't limit yourself to non-toxic and low-odor.

For Replace of the Bath tub Drain, should have the appropriate tools and equipment. you'll need a tub drain wrench. You will also need plumber's putty and a new drain. Remove the plug. Using pliers, grab onto the plug and twist, in a counter-clockwise direction untill the plug comes out of the hole. Use the tub wrench. Place the wrench into the hole, and using a counterclockwise motion, unscrew the drain flange and pull it up and out. Prepare the drain flange for installation. Smear plumber's putty under the flange rim. In order to ensure a water tight seal, this is a necessary step. Install the new drain, in to the hole. Screw in the stopper, until it is fully inserted into the new drain.Test your bathtub drain-stopper. Turn on the water If it holds water, your repair is successful. For anyone who stumbles across this later, that drain flange was completely glued to the drain pipe, so the solution was to cut it off (which can be done with a drill or dremel attachment) and glue in a new ABS coupling and a few more inches of ABS pipe to bring the pipe back up to the necessary height for the new pan.

There are inside cutters that can cut the pipe. I've also seen guys use a chisel/flat screwdriver and a hammer to break off the flange around the circumference. Not sure if enough of the pipe remains to glue to, but it would be a start.
