Help! I need advice on fixing my garden design.
Comments (11)My problem with the garden is every flower seems white. Need some color. The foliage looks nice. Flowers though to me are secondary to texture and foliage color, which in this garden is pretty good! I myself would not move the grass or sedge whatever it is. It makes the texture change. My garden is wild with overgrowth. It seems with perennials I'm always thinning them. Another suggestion is flower type, I don't see anything with spikes. You want different flower forms. Maybe a daisy form flower too. Irises etc. If you like the white look fine, but I myself would add silvers or silver foliage, or pastels would look great! Another consideration is early, mid, and late flowering plants. So it looks good all season. I myself am still experimenting, I doubt I will ever actually ever finish but keep changes things. Plus the fun of growing new plants. I have a flair for the unusual. My porch is full of tropical's, trees and plants like Pony Tail palm, Yucca tree, night blooming jasmine, etc. I have bamboo and cacti in the ground too. Some forms are winter hardy. It doesn't look typical! It looks eccentric, but I'm very much so! Mostly though I grow edibles and I'm into edible landscapes. I want to grow as many ornamental edibles as possible besides your normal garden. So edible dogwoods, June berries like Autumn Brilliance. Red leafed peach trees Weeping plum trees. A currant cordon on the fence, I like edible vines like Eastern Magnolia. Edible wild flowers are in the garden too. Strawberry and raspberry ground covers are next to be put in. Yes some raspberries are ground covers. I also grow regular raspberries too, I have 15 plants. I get 25-50 berries daily for 4 months. I have Pluots, and a Spice Zee Nectaplum. Indian Free peach that Thomas Jefferson grew. It is pretty much a jungle here! Many plants are small give me a few years, and I will show photos. It's still under construction. Comments (11)Aha I see where you're coming from - you are making it better, keep that in mind! Very sorry if I sounded preachy, its because so often people take away the cool old features, then wonder why its lost its charm I like your sketch - not the black and white necessarily, but it shows how unified color CAN pull it together. The other thing is the door. Youve got the right idea in the sketch with the single horizontal window - Or maybe think about one of these - http://retrorenovation.com/2014/07/22/4-places-buy-midcentury-entry-doors-home/ I like the ones w 3 horizontal windows (like in top row or under #8) and also the ones with 3 diamond shaped windows - those are simple, but would add a lot of style. You might be able to find something similar in your local Restore or architectural salvage. Dont do a door that might look cottagey or craftsman ... or anything from this century from off the shelf from a big box store.... or it will just add more visual chaos, not unify. The door is your one chance to make an architectural statement that gives it a touch of class and charm. Just keep it simple. As others have said, keep the paint colors simple - youve already got enough going on. Can the windows be painted? What color is roof?...See MoreHate my living room. Please help me fix!
Comments (19)Thank you all for your great ideas. Diana, the living room is the 1st room you enter after passing through a small enclosed entry on our large front porch we also have the deck 9x25 along the side of our house. We live in a New England seaside community so we live and entertain on the 2 areas all summer, so removing that door wouldn’t work. We have a family room off the other end of the deck with a slider. We use the living room for holidays and when company is here I bring in some chairs but there just is no room. I would love to seat 6 comfortably and have a TV tucked in somewhere for the times when grandkids are here or my husband and I don’t want to watch same thing. Other than that, it is the main road through my house! Ugh. Deco, I have attempted to break up this long room by centering love seat opposite fireplace which also allows tv viewing. Put the desk area and storage of grandkids arts and crafts stuff there. Maybe less bulky furniture would free up some space. I did have the tv on a lovely cedar chest but last year put it in that stand in order to confine the chachkis to one space. Lol. Any other spot for TV? We just converted from oil to gas, FP, so plan on converting the fireplace too. Do use it sometimes in winter. Took out the wall between dining and kitchen years ago and it is right next to fam room so not sure how that would work. And you hit the nail on the head with the wall space. Would be happy losing or gaining any furniture if it helps. Only room in my house I hate and it’s the 1st anyone sees. Thanks for replying and all ideas. I really appreciate...See MoreCan my Vanee be fixed, or should I give up at this point - Please help
Comments (10)I don't know if your unit can be repaired or not. The clicking noise you described is often an indication of a problem relay. Coupled with the wacky behavior of the damper motor, I'm guessing it's a relay in the damper motor control circuit. FWIW, I've installed two ERVs which also exhausted air from the bathrooms. When a bath vent fan switch was turned on, the units would increase in speed to ventilate the bathroom(s). I found that works better on paper then it does in reality. I recommend you install bath vent fans dedicated to individual bathrooms and not use the ERV to perform that function....See Morehawami
