Advice on ceiling heights and ceiling design?
Comments (16)Thank you for finding that old post Autumn! I was going to look for it myself when I read the title of this current posting. My biggest concern with the transition between our family room & kitchen was having the ability to paint the 2 rooms different colors (if I ever decided I wanted to do that.) That's why we had the column added. All your feelings are normal Laura! You will 2nd guess almost every decision, but for the most part it will all come together nicely and you'll be happy with your home! In looking at your floor plan - I think it would be nice to do molding above your opening as in the Houzz photo you posted. (Not sure what type of molding you're doing around your windows and door frames, but that room opening would follow in the same style as the rest of your doors/windows. I wanted to do that on mine, but we had a corner smack dab next to the right of our opening and a light switch to work around so we decided against trimming it out. Comments (9)Are you going to have anything between the kitchen and LR, such as an island? I think some kind of physical distinction would help. I don't know if this is what you have in mind, but I'm posting in case the visuals help. In this picture the coffers extend through to the kitchen, but the beam that runs above and parallel to the island could be a stopping point: so imagine beams on the LR side and not on the kitchen side. This one has an island with vertical cabs between the kitchen and FR. Beams on the FR ceiling and looks like no beams on the kitchen ceiling. In both of these examples a beam or soffit between the two spaces acts as a transition from one space to the next. HTH...See Moreneed paint color advice for 2 story foyer ceiling
Comments (6)Funcolors thank you for your reply. After reading many of your posts here I'm happy to get your knowledgeable advice. :) I've tried out 9 different paint samples and looked at probably 100 tan/beiges before finding Sierra Hills so glad to hear my choice is a good one. :) Seirra Hills looks close to SW Nomadic Desert to me on paint chip which is one up from Latte. I've thought about getting sample of it. What would you say would be different in these two colors? We are painting the upstairs hallway the same color. What should we do about the hallway ceiling? I don't want it to be too dark going down the long hallway. Should I leave it the off white or paint it a shade or two lighter then the foyer. We had changed the original house plans to add a office downstairs and bedroom upstairs so this is how the foyer struture ended up. There is a wide ledge/shelf under window then the front door below. The walls have needed painting for a long time so I'm excited to get it done soon. Nancy...See MoreCoffered Ceiling - Basement - need advice
Comments (7)I like it recessed as shown. I think if the beams are flush, the recessed areas will just look like holes in the ceiling. As built, the beams are more likely to look like beams. How is your builder fireblocking this? In my area, regular fiberglass insulation wasn't allowed as a fireblock—I had to use mineral wool....See MoreRower 76
