need paint color advice for 2 story foyer ceiling

I have a 2 story foyer with lots of light. I hope to have it painted soon. Probably with BM Sierra Hills or maybe slightly darker. My question is what do I do about the ceiling? Should I just paint it the same or lighter or darker ? A friend suggest we paint the sloped sides a lighter color but that would be only on 3 sides. Should we do the slope and flat ceiling the same or different shades? In the pic with window my front door is right below it. Thanks for advice.

I love Sierra Hills - it's very close to the popular SW Latte.

I'd probably go for the whole space one color. If you wanted to do something on the ceiling, it'd be darker than, not lighter than walls.

The structure, architecture of that space is interesting. A midtone-ish color like Sierra Hills would shadow nicely and serve the interesting slopes and details of the space well, IMO. Simple, classic, subtly defined, reign in the volume to a comfortable human scale -- that's what I think all one color would do.

I'd do all the same color. I had the same question last year when having my family room painted with 20 foot ceilings. It was recommended here that I paint it all the same color. I am so glad I did. Because of the different angle of the ceiling, the color looks different anyway.

I wanted to post some after photos and thank everyone who took the time to comment. It turns out that the wall was "indented" when we removed the chair rail so my DH has spent several weekends to build it back up with joint compound and texture it to blend in with the walls. It was a painfully tedious process (first trying to do it by hand, then with a sponge, then with spray-on compound that dribbled everywhere, and finally with a trowel lightly loading dabs of compound on). If you look closely you can still tell, but it's not as glaring as it was several iterations ago. Suffice to say, we are thrilled to be done with sanding, priming, texturing, and painting! Now, I need to figure out what wall decor to put up as the removal of the chair rail makes it a much easier space to deal with! Any and all advice would be appreciated. I was thinking of doing a photo gallery near the front entry, but that is a HUGE wall and I don't know that I can put photos high enough where you can still see them but not so low that the wall looks off-balance. Forgive the quality of the photos, taken without a flash on my iPhone.

Well, we do use the outlet for Christmas light. I am planning on painting it the color of the wall (cover and outlet both so it just "goes away"). The window is a double hung because from the outside it looks like the other windows on the 2nd floor. The house is called a "Victorian Farmhouse", so the windows across the front all look the same, you aren't supposed to think it has a 2 story foyer from the outside. Perhaps when we do replace it someday, we will choose a different style for there. Now you see why I'm interested in adding the faux window below it...too much wall space between the window and the door. This option will cost nothing, so I can try it out to see since I have that antique window in my family room hiding the hideous fireplace insert....I do like the idea of adding trim to the window, but none of the other windows in the house have this, but I guess it would match the door. There is just too much wall space in this foyer. I really want to add wood wainscott to the stairs and hall areas. But I have to take my dh into consideration...I think his bp is high enough! I'm also considering having some of our travel photos (upcoming European cruise) printed in b/w on canvas for the foyer--really large ones. This might help eat up some of the wall space. My dh keeps telling me to "just do a David Bromstad painting technique on canvas"--yeah right. thanks for the ideas.

The demilune table you have is very nice for the spot. Don't make the mistake of thinking you need to fill the whole wall just because it's tall. Try to keep things in proportion and remember to "decorate where you live". That means hanging artwork, mirrors, etc. as if your ceilings were 8 or 9 feet tall. Whatever you hang over your entry table should be about 2/3 to 3/4 the width of the table and no taller than the height of your door frames. I know it seems like there's going to be a lot of empty space, but that's okay. I moved from a 1949 cape with 7 1/2 foot ceilings to a house with 11' vaulted ceilings and had to learn that things really do look better hung at normal height. The current chandelier seems to be well proportioned for the space and hung at the right height. When you replace it, try to stay to something in that same size range. Oh definitely need entry chandelier that sets tone for your home. Your home looks lovely. The bamboo style is lovely but the one you have won’t have long enough wire so a new one is in order. What style furnishings do you have? House looks very traditional. More info and I can find great options for you.

Funcolors thank you for your reply. After reading many of your posts here I'm happy to get your knowledgeable advice. :) I've tried out 9 different paint samples and looked at probably 100 tan/beiges before finding Sierra Hills so glad to hear my choice is a good one. :) Seirra Hills looks close to SW Nomadic Desert to me on paint chip which is one up from Latte. I've thought about getting sample of it. What would you say would be different in these two colors? We are painting the upstairs hallway the same color. What should we do about the hallway ceiling? I don't want it to be too dark going down the long hallway. Should I leave it the off white or paint it a shade or two lighter then the foyer. We had changed the original house plans to add a office downstairs and bedroom upstairs so this is how the foyer struture ended up. There is a wide ledge/shelf under window then the front door below. The walls have needed painting for a long time so I'm excited to get it done soon.

jillinnj and htnspz Thanks for your replies. I'm going with one color. I think that will look best too. Hopefully that will keep the cost down on hiring it to be painted. It's my first time hiring a painter but no way do I want to paint that high ceiling,

As the designated painter in our household, high ceilings or not,it would be a tough job for even the most skilled professional painter to achieve perfect cutoff areas on your ceiling by what my monitor shows. Using one uniform color will achieve the same effect as the color and light will bounce off and reflect lighter and darker shades.

Good choice going with the all for one.
