Bathroom is due for overhaul, layout ideas?
Comments (12)That's a great point about a mirror in that spot reflecting natural light back into the room. I think you would really love having very deep counters there too. Deep counters would also allow you to put sizable sinks in, which is a real benefit, IMO. Re: the shower. Unfortunately, I don't know how to do a drawing here. Let me see if I can describe what I mean better. The shower would be a walking, triangular, in the footprint of the jacuzzi tub there now. Facing the tub, there would be a glass wall coming out from the wall where your long vanity is going out to where it would meet the shower door joint. Shower door would be where the jacuzzi tub faucet is, right in the center there, facing the corner where the two sets of windows meet, attached to two glass panels on either side of the door. But then, where the shorter, single-sink vanity is now, imagine cutting that vanity, say, 1/3 from the right, so you have 2/3 of that space on the left. On the left you'd have a built-in cabinet to hold towels and such. On the right, the shower walls would be extend to include that area inside the shower with shelving to hold shampoo bottles, razors, etc. In other words, the shower would comprise of the entire window area. You'd have to speak to a plumber about where the faucets and shower head would be situation. You want to be able to reach your shampoo bottles w/o having to walk across the shower to get them and put them back. Maybe a shower head in the ceiling in the center of the shower? However, with glass walls and doors, you'll definitely want a hand shower nozzle in there too for cleaning, so it'd have to be figured out where that would go, probably by the shelving, near the old small single-vanity sink, since there is a water source right there. Knobs to turn on both the overhead shower and the hand shower could be on that slice of wall there vertically. You'd have to get into the shower to turn them on, though. Add some teak benching under the left window for shaving legs (or aging) and so you can reach the hand shower....See MoreKitchen layout advice - weird wrap around corner
Comments (8)No reason not to put a door there and have it open on both sides....unless you want drawers in that spot facing the island (I would, unless I had a particular NEED for a cab there). Orrrr..use extra large drawer faces on the drawers on the short side so it looks like the entire stubby run is a drawer bank. Sure, you'd be disappointed when you opened it, but not before then. If that's too weird, and you also do want a cabinet instead of all drawers, swap the door for the drawers. Put the drawers in the corner opening toward the island and put doors under the glass uppers. Then you can have 3 evenly sized doors, except one of them is fake....See MoreKnocking out a wall-weird kitchen layout?
Comments (9)I'm guessing the living room is on the back side of the range wall, due to the location of the dining room. What kind of fireplace do you have? Is it raised? Gas or wood? Does the hearth stick out into the room quite a bit? If you can work around the fireplace, it could look great in the room, but you need it to not interfere with your traffic patterns. Since you have seating on the peninsula, what if you take the sink area and move it closer to the range wall...as an island without seating on the other side. This should give you room for walkways and maybe even a window seat next to the fireplace. Then, keep the sofa or replace it with a small table and chairs. Just an idea :) From Cottage house plans...See MoreWeird kitchen layout?
Comments (5)I would strongly suggest posting a floor plan of the entire floor the kitchen is on (including all adjacent rooms) where everything is drawn to-scale on graph paper. Let us take a look at the entire space and make some layout suggestions. I've helped people with a lot a lot a lot of kitchen layouts, and you're waving two red flags with this question. Kitchens (a) generally need walls and (b) generally do not benefit from lots of 90 degree corners. You're proposing something with minimal walls and lots of corners. It's sort of like telling a bunch of bakers that you're trying to make a cake for your birthday and are there any good examples of bacon and toothpaste cakes that we know of. People who know cake are going to immediately recognize that maybe you're not headed in a terrific direction and that the best help would not be to provide bacon and toothpaste recipes but to suggest some alternative ideas. Post a floor plan and let us try to come up with something better. It's a free exercise and can be very helpful....See MoreUser
