Shopping Question
Comments (21)mamapinky0, I used to consult with PetSmart and became very familiar with a lot of the pet food brands. I used to think that basically pet food is pet food and they're required to have adequate nutrition but experience with my pets and education taught me otherwise and was quite a surprise and eye-opener. For your question, Iams is WAY above Purina Dog Chow. There's no comparison. Purina's competition for Iams is PurinaONE (and it's FAR superior to Dog Chow), and some others would be Wellness, Dog chow is cheap and it's because of the ingredients. I just took a look to see if there's been a change and there hasn't that I noticed in my cursory look. The #1 ingredient in Dog Chow is still "whole grain corn" while the #1 ingredient in Iams is "chicken". Dogs are carnivores, not vegetarians. They need and want meat and meat proteins. I used to feed my cats Eukanuba which is Iams' sister brand (a competitor for such brands as Science Diet, Royal Canin, etc). Dog Chow is a grocery store line of food, Iams is a "premium" food and Eukanuba is a "super premium" line. You pay more to get better ingredients. I learned a lot there. Especially how certain manufacturers use what's known as "ingredient splitting" in the low-grade foods. Ingredient splitting is when they divide up the ingredients so there isn't as much in the percentages and they can rearrange the ingredient lineup. This is often done on foods containing rice. They'll split it into different rice names. Sneaky. For the original question, I do both but mostly brick & mortar. When I had pets I thought about having food and cat litter delivered since it got very difficult for me to handle it. Never did on the pet supplies. This time of year though, I'll buy more online to avoid the crowds and nutcases in the stores. Plus sometimes I can get better deals online. How I decide? Mood for one thing. Need is another. If I need it now, I need to get it now. Price is a consideration. Distance to the store/cost of getting it is factored in. Whether I feel like fighting a crowd or not. How I'm feeling. If I'm too stiff or sore to go out, I don't. Availability is another. I get really frustrated when I go to a store and they don't have what I want/need. So there's no simple answer or formula. It varies....See MoreHome Delivery Meal Kit Plans - Qs and (hopefully) As
Comments (42)Well, I received my HelloFresh box yesterday. (I canceled my subscription but I'd already paid for the first week of three choices) I haven't made any of the meals but here are a few of my first impressions.. Rory, I believe you signed up in the same week I did so I'll be curious to hear what you thought. I chose three meals-- a shrimp and asparagus risotto with meyer lemon, a spicy apricot chicken with green beans and couscous and a steak with tomato vinaigrette. Two were under 600 calories, one was at 630. That's a caloric range I am comfortable with... still, I feel the menus are wayyyy too light on veggies. Even more so when I opened one of the meal boxes. The quantity of asparagus was very small-- about the size (or even a bit less) than what I'd use for one serving. I am not completely anti-carb but I will often double up on veggies over carbs. the packaging was simple and the instruction cards were clear and seem to be complete. They are definitely worthy of saving for to make another time though I wish they were much smaller. I won't likely keep them. The quality of the proteins looks pretty good-- I'll know better when I prepare the dishes. I will say that given the initial week cost only $29, I don't think I'd have been able to shop for these meals on my own for the price... but then had I shopped on my own, I'd probably have ditched at least 1 of the carb side dishes (cheap) and added veggies/salad makings (more expensive). Petalique, I think you are right on target. I need to come up with my own ideas for "kits" and shop based on them. A number of the dishes across services are things I either already make or could easily make. I just need to be motivated to stick with the shopping. On a side note: I have decided to try the every other day fasting-- 500 calories one day, eat what you want the next day. This will require that I keep up with shopping so that I have good, fresh produce for the 500 calorie days. I am just going to have to get better about planning and going to the market. I don't plan on pigging out on the "eat what you want" days but I am going to want some variety on those days since the 500 calorie days aren't likely to have much variation....See MoreThe future of grocery shopping.
Comments (38)Pre-vision issues, I could spend a lot of time at the grocery store.. I used to meet up with a friend who was also very busy and we'd grab a cup of coffee and shop together. When solo, I could happily wander the aisles looking for new items and selecting produce, meat etc. Just as background, I've been using primarily instacart for 4 yr-- as I can no longer shop in the traditional grocery stores (Ive talked about this ad nauseum so I won't go into the details here again). I can manage the Farmer's Market when it isn't busy-- and I hope to be able to manage Trader Joe's when it opens here in a few months. When i do go shopping, i need to take uber or piggyback on a sister or friend. Because of the increase in subscribers during the pandemic, I have seen pretty big improvements in the service. Of course there were supply/stocking issues in the stores-- but the service itself HAD to improve given the volume. I now get instantaneous credits for issues reported-- literally within seconds. No questions asked. Also, they have been providing me with coupons/perks pretty regularly. I just had $24 added to my account today "as a way to say thanks". Sure, I have had issues along the way-- including one recently where the driver dropped my order off at the wrong house! Even still, instacart has addressed the issues immediately and satisfactorily. Overall, the convenience has outweighed the inconvenience-- and even if it didn't, it is a service I depend on. Especially now that they include stores like Best Buy, Staples, Dicks Sporting Goods, Sephora and more. In the last month, I bought headphones for a gift and had a mouse delivered in 2 hr when my own mouse shorted out. I have tried other services, Shipt doesn't keep their store stock current which really annoys me. Walmart is substantially cheaper but not as reliable and there is no communication with the shopper as they are picking my order, RiteAid pharmacy delivery is frequently late-- but they have bent over backwards when I needed a prescription ASAP for a debilitating sinus infection. I used Amazon Fresh ages ago when they first started-- it worked pretty well for me and I appreciated getting WF items (we don't have a WF nearby) == unfortunately, they stopped the service in my area. I haven't used Peapod but both Amazon and Peapod work via the warehouse model vs brick and mortar. We do have a Giant food store-- but even so, Peapod delivers from warehouse stock, not brick and mortar stock. I don't expect these services to go away post-pandemic. Even friends and family who were resistant to the concept of grocery delivery are converts-- even if they don't use the services consistently. It is a huge convenience -- even with losing the freedom to browse and select your own produce, meat, etc....See MoreHave you shopped or ordered from Kroger's?
Comments (65)LOL, Sherry. I normally wouldn't mind because low point beer and wine will put you in the same state of mind as a shot of JD, if you drink enough. :) But if stores did sell hard liquor many mom and pop stores across all states will close putting many out of business. OTOH, there is still so many underage teens, especially in rural areas like mine, who either crash and die or crash and go into a coma and come out six months later with cognitive impairment. That happened to my nephew right after he graduated in a small town MO. It happend here 16 days ago to a Sr. in our high school who was driving on a 2 lane paved road not far from us during the night after drinking, not wearing a seatbelt, and he still hasn't woken up. Another teen in my son's class died a mile from us. Thanks for the tips everyone. I still haven't had time to look over the site yet. My daughter in law recommends the ice cream. :)...See MoreKathsgrdn
