Master bath tile — porcelain marble look

I am trying to make the following decisions and would appreciate some advice. I plan on using the following polished porcelain in Statuario Venato in a master bath. Here is a link with photos of it:

Questions:

For bath floor, would you do 12x24 herringbone OR 24x24 on diagonal? I like herringbone because more interesting but worried it may be too busy. I plan to do 24x24 of same tile stacked on shower walls and basketweave of same tile on shower floor. But if do 24x24 again on bath floor, may be too boring because same size tile on floor and shower walls but on shower walls would be stacked and diagonal on floor.

OK to do light grey grout on bath floor and white grout using same tile on shower walls? Or should grout color be the same for floor and walls using the same tile? I prefer grey grout on floor but then see it more - so seems better with herringbone floor pattern. But then ok to use white grout on shower walls using same tile but different size?

Photos of similar tiles showing these options would be helpful.

You are way overthinking it. With a busy marble look tile, varying tile size and layout doesn’t give you any bang for your buck for the added upcharge expense of choice complexity. The tile itself is the statement. It doesn’t need all these different sizes and layouts.

Would you do white or light grey grout with it? Ok to do light grey grout with it on the floor and white grout with it on the walls?

I like this tile design in the shower and was thinking I can do the ming brick pattern tile on the bottom with white subway on top and some ming pencil border up top. Any thoughts on how this would look? Another idea is to do all white subway with a thick ming tile border. I don't want to use ming marble tile on the floors. I would like to use some sort of porcelain tile for ease of cleaning and also since it is more budget friendly. Any suggestions other than the wood porcelain tile?

We just gutted our hall bath and used polished porcelain, we are not done yet but the cleanup after grouting was a breeze, I highly recommend! Also, they don't need to be sealed like natural stone but I would recommend sealing your grout.

You are correct, Emily. The kerf of the saw blade takes close to an 1/8" of tile. Therefore, cutting from both ends leaves the center section too narrow to be used if they are to be a full 4" wide (assuming the cuts are parallel to the long edge). The OP will get 48" of usable baseboard from each tile, and the rest is waste. As you suggested, all of the pieces can have the factory edge exposed at the top.

Go to the better tile showrooms in your area; they will have plenty of options and sizes for your project. Once you start liking a tile line, it's easy enough to pull the rest of the elements together; but you need to see what's appealing to you in person.

Too much going on. I agree that two many angles and directions aren't the best choice for a marble look tile. Marble itself is the statement, not the direction. 24 x 24 is a square which is IMO an older and more dated look. I'd go with the 12 x 24 and run it in a brick pattern. I'd do it on the shower walls and the floor. I think the basketweave shower floor will look lovely with the 12 x 24 as it will repeat the elongated shape of your larger tiles. I'd do white grout for all.

Good points, thanks. Yes I agree 24x24 is a more dated look but on the diagonal on the floor it seems to open up the space more. And 24x24 stacked on the walls is also dated but maybe less busy than 12x24. I am a bit worried this tile may be too busy with the veining so was trying to minimize it with larger tiles. Alternatively I could use a less busy porcelain marble look tile and use 12x24. Problem is I have had a hard time finding a white porcelain marble look tile with light grey veining and not too much of it (preferably made in Italy or Spain and not line veining like Dolomite).

Vallelunga makes a wide variety of marble-look porcelain, each available in many sizes.

Thanks! I looked at Vallelunga but did not see one with white/cream

background and light grey veining - and not too much veining. The one I saw seemed to have heavy, dark veining.

Actually looking at it again, the Vallelunga Statuario looks pretty and not too busy. I wonder how it compares to the one above from Arizona Tile/Ceramiche D’Agostino. Both are from Italy. Wonder which would look better.... Thank you!!

12x24, polished porcelain. Offset ~33%.
Might be placing light grey grout or bone...

The way we laid them, we tried to connect the veins.
From far it looks like one slab, cut with brick cookie cutter...

Veins a bit zig zag, very similar like in the catalogue....

Me AGirl, nicely done on the layout! Most people don't even think about it and leave it to a tile installer, who usually doesn't think about it either.

Someone posted a bathroom recently, full of marble, that was a very busy, migraine inducing mess, with no thought to the colors/patterns of the tiles as they were installed.

It takes time to work through the layout and create a visually pleasing overall pattern.

You can certainly do a brick or stacked pattern in the shower and a larger format tile for the floor. This is not overthinking AT ALL. This is simple design 101, in fact, the same stone in different sizes and even shapes (like hex) is very inviting to the eye and it breaks up the monotony. Also, there is nothing wrong with different colors for grout on floor and walls. It sounds like a 12x24 might be a bit big for a herringbone pattern unless you have a LARGE floor to lay it out on. Even so, the diagonal look is very interesting in a 30cm tile for example. Your original idea sounds fine!!!
