Homeschool room in Formal Dining Room or Office?
Comments (8)I know the way we do it is not for everyone, but I will tell you what works for us! We do not homeschool, but we do believe that education happens all day long, and much of it comes from us as parents. We keep educational things all over our dining room. Our dining room is also the main eating area for us, since our kitchen is not an eat-in kitchen. Almost everyone that comes to visit sees the dining room from where they are sitting or standing, or has to pass through it at some point. The underlying décor in the dining room is nicely done and the school materials are fairly well organized. There is no one that would visit here that would not understand why our dining room looks the way it does, and we have never been embarrassed by it. Our kids have grown up with placemats that have maps, math, presidents, etc. on them, and have learned many things from the conversations we have at the dinner table while using these placemats. We have had conversion charts, periodic tables, maps, money charts, clock posters, and number lines on the wall over the years. The kids have learned from them because they are where they can see them any time of day. The room is constantly changing as the kids grow. The kids also have their desks in the dining room. We don't really have another place for them. We have an extra room, but we use that as a craft room, which is usually somewhat messy...their desks stay clean and useable when they are out where we can see them. They do use the craft room for school projects, and that way the projects can stay out until they are completed. Our dining room is never in magazine-worthy condition for sure, but I know that the kids are only kids for a short time, and it is so fun to use every opportunity to teach them new things. Also, this is our own home for raising them, so I don't really think about how the décor looks to other people that might stop by for a visit. I will have a beautiful dining room later in life, when the kids are grown and gone. To me, at this stage in our lives, this is beautiful décor to me! Comments (12)I'd rather prep facing the ocean than do dishes. The vast majority of time spent in the Kitchen is spent preparing a meal, not cleaning up. And most of the cleanup work is not done at the sink! 70% or more time spent in the Kitchen is spent preparing a meal or snack 20% or less is spent cleaning up - and that includes not just sink work (hand washing a few items), but also non-sink work such as loading the DW (if you don't pre-rinse your dishes), unloading the DW, clearing the counters & table, wiping down the counters & table, and sweeping up at the end of the day. 10% is spent cooking - stirring, adding ingredients, watching food cook Based on the above, it makes the most sense to have the Prep Zone in the best spot....See MoreSmaller dining room 12x12 and pantry or larger DR no pantry?
Comments (14)Do you have another eating area besides the dining room and the island? If so how many can you seat there? Also of that is the case how do you intend to use the dining room. If it is only occasionally as in rarely then a smaller room would be ok, but if it is once a week and you’d have 8 people once a week then it might bug you more. If it is rarely and just a few times a year then I’d also consider doing away with it if you have another eating area and use this dining to enlarge the kitchen/ pantry and the other dining area....See MoreHelp Plan 20x12' Kitchen / Dining Room Area
Comments (14)Is that a powder room or pantry in the top right corner? You can probably fit this plan (m/l) without changing the entries, but I think it's an interesting option. At 11'7", the aisle between peninsula and fridge could be almost 48" (with a CD fridge). High chairs (if you still use those) could go on the short sides of the table, then kids could move to the bench as they grow. Open DW door would block access to upper cabs to the left, so dishes would be stored to the right of the sink. I guessed at some measurements, and the first drawing is not to scale: ETA, two entry option. Prep space is smaller, but again, not to scale:...See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
