Cookies - what are they?

I understand that cookies are small pieces of data installed on my computer when I access some web pages, to make getting that same page later faster. What sort of information do they save? But do they have any other advantage? What would I be throwing away if I periodically remove all cookies.

Cookies provide functions such as remembering personal configuration settings for a website, and holding contents of a shopping cart until the transaction is completed.

Many cookies are tracking cookies which collect information about you, your interests, and your shopping preferences, and can log where you go on the Internet. This helps companies develop market analyses and throw up ads tailored to your interests. That is why if you are curious about, say, some disease you might see specific prescription ads showing up shortly thereafter on your computer. Many of us consider them to be a gross invasion of privacy. I regularly delete all of my cookies because of this. The only problem is that then I have to re-enter passwords for some sites because the cookie that logged me in was deleted when I purged all the cookies. All browsers typically have ways to easily clear your cookies. For example, if you click in the upper right of Chrome, the drop-down menu has a listing called: "More tools"; if you click on that, there is an option to "Clear browsing data." Some browsers can be set to automatically clear the cookies whenever you close them. If you've never done this, you probably have thousands and thousands of cookies and it may take a little while before the browser finishes clearing them.

I'd be surprised if beating the butter w/the sugar and molasses, as opposed to by itself, would make any difference. Even though the recipe says not to cut until cool, I'm wondering if cutting them while still warm would reduce the crumbliness. You could try cutting while warm but not actually separating them until they cooled. (?) The ingredients sound wonderfully tasty, but the 1/2 cup of cornstarch is a bit surprising to me. Can that be right? This could be one of those cases where the next issue of the magazine says " In our last issue, in the recipe for Ginger Cookies, the ingredients should have read one half teaspoon cornstarch, instead of 1/2 cup." LOL

It would be called the "Calories Be Gone Cookie". It would come in many delicious flavors.. you would eat one in the morning, then you could eat whatever you wanted the rest of the day and the calories would be 'ate up' by the cookie's secret ingredient. I need to get started on that... I'd become a very rich woman. :-)

What kind of kitchen sink???

"I am leaning toward Silgranit" I think that's a great choice, but color choice is key to the level of maintenance needed on a Silgranit sink. I have a Silgranit sink in anthracite (black). It's actually my second one in my second kitchen. I loved it so much, I bought it twice! It is easy care and shows nothing. The black is dramatic too, and looks great with my faucet and counters. Because I think it's the easiest sink I've ever had, I recommended it to my friend. She heard my enthusiasm, and bought one for her kitchen, but she bought it in the white color. She finds it very hard to keep looking clean. She showed me how easily it stains from coffee and wine, and also how difficult it is to keep looking clean and get those stains out. I feel terribly guilty. I had no idea the white color would behave so differently from the anthracite. After seeing first-hand my friend demonstrate the easy staining and the difficult cleaning of the white color, I cannot recommend it. I would absolutely though buy another in anthracite, or one of the other darker colors like café brown or gray, without hesitation. Single bowl sink gets my vote. And what's more, love that the BlancoDiamond Silgranit has the corner drain. Corner drain allows you to set pans down in the sink without covering the drain, and to have a disposal that is in the corner so doesn't crowd storage in cabinet under the sink. As to sinks with accessories - you have to look at your personal style in the kitchen. I love my large thick cutting board on my counter. I prefer my separate RSVP Precision Colander to drain pasta and wash veggies. I have no use for other accessories, and don't need those two accessories I mentioned to be part of my sink. But that is how I operate in the kitchen, and everyone is different. Consider this carefully before you decide what sink you want.

Bar Cookies - What's your most decadent recipe?

It's been awhile, but 3 come to mind... I used to make crumble bar cookies with a sugar cookie dough base and fruit jam mixed with some lemon or lime juice for tang. I also used to make those bars made with crushed graham crackers, condensed milk, chocolate chips and coconut - Magic Cookie Bars. Then there's these - from one of my vintage cookbooks - they are very much like toffee candy: Toffee Bars 1 c. sugar (Brown, or white mixed w/ 1 T molasses) 1 cup butter 2 c. flour 1/4 tsp. salt 1-2 tsp. vanilla 1 c. chocolate chips 1 c. chopped nuts 1/2 c. raisins (optional) Blend all ingredients well. Press into 10"X15' jelly roll pan. Bake 18-25 minutes @ 350F (until golden brown). Cut while hot. Remove from pan when cool. IIRC, 1 cup of butter made it too greasy, so I reduced the amount by a couple of Tbs. I have a number of saved crumble bar recipes, I think this is the one I used, but without the oats, and I cheated with a sugar cooky mix: Raspberry Crumble Cakes 1 cup butter, at room temperature 1/2 cup sifted confectioners' sugar 2 cups flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup rolled oats 1/2 cup chopped walnuts 3/4 cup raspberry jam Step 1 Heat the oven to 375° F. Grease a 9-inch square pan with butter or cooking spray. Step 2 In a mixing bowl, beat the butter and sugar until they're well blended. Add the flour and salt and beat just until the dough forms clumps. Don't overmix. Lightly flour your hands, then place the dough on a piece of waxed paper and squeeze it into a ball (the warmth of your hands will soften the dough enough to hold it together). Step 3 Divide the dough into thirds. Crumble one third into a bowl and set it aside. Press the remaining 2 thirds evenly into the greased pan using the back of a spoon to smooth the surface. Bake it on the center oven rack until the edges are lightly golden, about 10 minutes. Step 4 Set the pan on a wire rack. While the shortbread cools, mix the oats and nuts into the reserved dough with your fingers until the mixture is crumbly. Step 5 Spread the raspberry jam on the cooled shortbread (it's okay if it's still warm), then evenly cover the jam with the crumb topping. Bake the bars until the topping is golden brown, about 24 minutes, then return the pan to the wire rack. While the shortbread is still slightly warm, cut it into 16 squares, then cut each square in half diagonally. Once the triangles cool completely (they are very fragile while warm), lift them from the pan with a spatula. Makes about 2 1/2 dozen.

Thanks, Kudzu. You answered my main concern - that is, if I clear all cookies, then I better be sure I can remember all the internet passwords I might need again.

Not all sites work the same: I only have to re-enter passwords for some of my web sites after I clear the cookies, but that could be a function of some additional apps I have...can't say for sure. In any case, it's always a good idea to have all of your passwords written down and stored in a safe place. ;-)

Your PC will operate quicker if you clear cookies and cached pages in your browser regularly. You can set FIrefox to do this when the browser is closed, others it's a step requiring a few quick clicks. Yes, you need to re-enter passwords afterwards but that's a small inconvenience compared to the performance gain.

Elmer, at least for my web browsing, pages load much faster if they have been previously stored in the browser's cache. Easy to see this when I clear Firefox's cache & the first time I browse, say, gardenweb, the loading is much slower. The caching is done for that reason.

Majority of browsers have a setting for how much disk space is allotted for temp files ... cookies and caching pages (cookies probably take priority over page caching). Adjust the setting if there's concern for a huge cache causing slow performance.

That might deal with performance problems, but there's still the issue of how much snooping you want to allow on your computer. ;-)
