what are cookies

I would like to know what cookies are, and what they do on the computer. One person says they are not necessary on the computer and another person says that you need to have them on. Can someone please tell me which is right. Thank you for any help you might give me........Grace

Read the link below. IMHO cookies are more helpful than unhelpful, but they do need to be cleaned out occasionally (I do it about once a month) just to keep things running smoothly. If you want to log in each time you visit a web site, then don't use them.

I have two plain, uncoated/unanodized aluminum half-sheet size jellyroll pans (with the 1" lip). I'm on my second set in 40 years. Both were purchased from restaurant supply stores; we live in the SF Bay Area so there are half a dozen to chose from. I hardly ever bake cookies, LOL, but I use these all the time - at least twice a week, sometimes both at once. Everything from roasting 3 lb. of asparagus to oven-baked breaded chicken thighs, or roasting raw pine nuts to store in the freezer for salad topping. I have one "open" smaller cookie sheet (the kind with sides that slant upwards, but open corners) in a lighter weight that is easy to grab and works well for 'holding', such as draining bacon on paper towels and keeping the strips warm in the oven. I also have a new Circulon non-stick 10x15 pan, very heavy weight, that is perfect when I am sear-roasting steaks. I heat the sheet pan up in the oven until it's sizzling, then sear the steaks on the stovetop. Finish them off in the oven, and they're perfect. I have carpal tunnel, so I use the above technique in lieu of a cast iron pan, which is too hard on my wrists to lift easily.

We're about to host our 2010 Eve's Garden Texas Annual Christmas Cookie Swap. My thought was to create a hostess gift of ideas in a flyer to show attendees how they could CREATIVELY Present their take home COOKIES as gifts. BHG and Martha Stewart offered some great ideas. Ediej, that is close and the background and regions are interesting. I'm going to research further the other recipe mentions in that link, too. Thank you for sharing that. One of my sisters has a recipe card from my grandmother with the nut mixture used. It's called "pita" nut mixture and use sugar, finely ground walnuts, and lemon rind. And then fold in 8 stiffly beaten egg whites. But a google search of "pita" cookies doesn't come up with anything similar. I enjoyed them every Christmas as a child, along with kifle (she made those with 2 kinds of filling--nuts and apricots). I could leave the kifle (too much dough), but her other cookies mentioned above were much better to me--richer flavors with the nuts, preserves and hint of lemon.

cc, I use this one, and I use my own homemade raspberry jam, but the other layer is usually peach instead of apricot because I don't grow apricots, LOL. Italian Rainbow Cookies 4 large eggs 1 cup sugar 3-1/2 ounces almond paste, cut into small pieces 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup butter, melted and cooled 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon almond extract 6 to 8 drops red food coloring 6 to 8 drops green food coloring 1/4 cup seedless raspberry jam 1/4 cup apricot jam GLAZE: 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips 1 teaspoon shortening Preheat oven to 375°. In a large bowl, beat eggs and sugar 2-3 minutes or until thick and lemon-colored. Gradually add almond paste; mix well. Gradually add flour, butter, salt and extract. Divide batter into thirds. Tint one portion red and one portion green; leave remaining portion plain. Spread one portion into each of three well-greased 11x7-in. baking dishes. Bake 7-11 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean and edges begins to brown. Cool 10 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks to cool completely. Place red layer on waxed paper; spread with 2 tablespoons jam. Top with plain layer and remaining jam. Add green layer; press down gently. For glaze, in a microwave, melt chocolate chips and shortening; stir until smooth. Spread half over green layer. Refrigerate 20 minutes or until set. Turn over; spread remaining glaze over red layer. Refrigerate 20 minutes or until set. With a sharp knife, trim edges. Cut rectangle lengthwise into fourths. Cut each portion into 1/4-in. slices. Have fun! Annie

They are little files that are planted in your browser by web sites when you vist them. They can be helpful, such as allowing you to not need to log in to a web site like your email, or here, or Amazon each time you visit. The downside is that they can do other things like allowing someone else who sits down at your computer to have easy access to your email and other accounts. They also can track where you go on the Web, find our what kind of searches you do, and send popup ads to you that reflect what their snooping shows about your Web activities. For example, type "arthritis" in to Google, and soon you may get popup ads for pain relievers.

I don't like them, so I have my browser set to reject cookies, and to clear out those that have sneaked by when I close the browser. This means, for example, that each time I open the browser, go to GW, and want to post here, I have to log in. But I don't have to do it again unless I close the browser. For me, that's a small price to pay for a little more privacy and security.

I live at the other end of the spectrum, I allow all cookies except third party ones.

They only get cleaned out every 3 or 4 months if I remember and even then I retain those for places where a log in is needed by using Ccleaner. Nor do I get pop up advertising yet I Google frequently.

Thank you eveiryone for your replies. I did have cookies on my XP computer. I hardly knew that they were on my computer. Still up in the air as to what to do.........Grace

From reading all of the cookie posts in this forum I don't think it makes any difference either way. I would not worry about it. I use CCleaner and I can save the cookies I need to keep from logging in with that software. It is simple and easy to use, just don't use the registry part of it. I had to go into the application section and remove the check mark from FF internet history so it would not erase the colors of the posts I have read and have not read.
