Do you have a platform bed?

We're looking to replace our king-size bed frame with a low profile platform bed like this one, for example. Our mattress is about 10" or 11" tall, so overall height would be about 18". I'm wondering if this will be too low to the ground, or look odd with normal height nightstands. Our bedroom style is spare; small room and we prefer less-is-more anyway. I think my main concern is how comfortable or uncomfortable it might be getting in and out of bed. Could anyone weigh in please?

That's pretty low. Been there,,, Look for a frame with a bit more depth, and add a bunkie board under the mattress. Ours is wrapped in a fitted sheet, to match/contrast with the sheet on the mattress. Or get a frame that is just higher. Ikea has several that are adjustable.

But without the bunkie board, it will be annoyingly low. From personal experience.

I would find that low. The nurses at my mothers senior facility placed her adjustable bed at 23" for safe entering and exiting. She is 5' tall. In slippers ;0)

The side rails top on my own bed are 21". Mattress/sleeping height with its feather bed is 32". Some might find that a little high (shaker style 4 poster with side and top rails) but I managed comfortably recovering from hip surgery in that bed, no problems in or out. 5'3".

No, but I have to hitch a hip up to get in just a bit. We have a CA king water bed with a temper pedic mattress and foundation on it. In the motor home, the base is high, higher than the bed in the house. I get in the same way, just hitch a bit higher! But if we can't put the side slide out, I have to use the stool to get up on it from the foot of the bed, because there is about 2" between the bed and the closet with the slide closed. When we had the water bed mattress, I had my hystorectomy and DH had to cut down the side of the bed for me to get in and out by myself. I couldn't roll out like I used to due to the incision. He worked night shift, so for him to be able to go back to work after a week home with me, I had to be able to do it without help. Tami

I just did a green manure over winter and then double dug the mass of Austrian peas and crownvetch deep into the bed this spring right before planting. They told me to wait 2 weeks but I didn't because I was already late. I figured it would be two weeks before any roots got down there.. GOD, everything is loving it. It could be all the rain too. I have never seen green beans so happy or cucumbers so quick out of the gate and fruiting so quickly too.. I will be doing green manure to half my garden next year. I missed having my winter garden last year. About the draining water. My raised beds are big enough and high enough so I plant in ditches around tomatoes and build hollows around my cages of beans. Everything gets a bit of a ditch in the summertime. When I water the ditches and walls direct the water to the roots. It does not spread out. I learned that from someone who gardens in New Mexico. I have been thinking of using some ollahs too as an experiment. There are ways to make them with clay pots and a plastic gallon jug with holes in the bottom variation.

We have an adjustable latex queen bed. It is not split. Of course dH wants his feet up, and I cannot breath unless my head is elevated. I wish we had gotten the split king, since they did not have split queens. We comprised! He got the bed; I bought a recliner and put it in the (cramped) bedroom. He can elevate his feet, and I can breathe in the recliner. I “make” the recliner just like it’s a bed, with bottom sheets, as many blankets as I need, and a colorful top “bedspread.” I can sleep warmly now! He runs “hot” and never wants more than one thin blanket on the bed. He can sleep “cold.” It’s hard for me to sit on the side of the bed. I raise the head and foot up a bit to change the sheets, too.

Do you have a heated pet bed?

Yep! We have four cats and 7 heated beds/stations scattered througout the house. The idea was that the cats would use the beds instead of our furniture. We have only three actual beds, and the rest are just the heating pad slipped under a blanket, cat mat or chair cover. All of our beds and blankets are K&H brand, and they are plugged in 24/7 from October to April. Our cats love them. P.S. All our cats are seniors. No one has peed in the beds.

I've had the same platform bed for at least 20 years, and with the last mattress that I bought, the height of the mattress is 26-1/2", which is higher than I would like, but it does make it easier for me to use the night stand, which is 29" high. My current mattress is 14" high, and I believe my previous one was 10" high, bringing the height down to 22-1/2", which I felt was more ideal.

Benches are frequently 18" high, and they are supposed to be lower than beds, if you have one at the end of the bed.

Thanks for your responses, they are helpful and confirm what I was thinking. I'm also concerned it might be a temptation for my dogs at that height. They're short enough that they don't even consider hopping up on current bed. Also, my linen cover wouldn't work anymore since it's almost too large as it is.
