What materials do you have on your countertops?
Comments (79)I found some at Dal Tile that fit perfectly. I want a box cap in matte black but so far I have an off-white V-cap that lines up perfectly with the hex. Same thickness. Of course I plan to slope the counter slightly into the sink. I plan a white hex field with a pattern we will make ourselves using loose black and "bayberry" tiles. There are some terrific colors available. Dal has great rich colors in hex. Have you seen them? The woman who owns Designs in Tile (California) makes period designs to order. (Anita??) Pricey but nice. I looked into this during my bathroom remodel a few years ago but decided to stay simple (and economical). I wouldn't use a wood edge but I'll bet you could be creative with the pieces you find. I'd hate to give up a water-tight counter by incorporating wood. There was little available (especially in my budget) when I did my bath. I came up with something creative for the baseboards when we couldn't find the "right" piece. It's been 7 years and I'm still happy with our clever baseboard. I will absolutely post mine when I have something to post! What are you looking for with your counter project? Is it a period project or something quite different?...See MoreYour favorite kitchen countertop accessory
Comments (24)Kris: Faster than trying to find my camera, here's the link to my kettle (it is more handsome in person - a perfect red and so shiny!) Who knew the look of a kettle could make me so happy! Glad, I didn't have to make too many changes in the kitchen, based on pets or kids (the knobs of my stove pull off and can be stored elsewhere - due to curious kids, not cats, obviously). I wish, though, that I could design a kitchen where an alarm goes off when I'm about to step on Norman 's tail(the old cat, seems to rush up behind me when I'm at the fridge or stove). I did manage to pick a granite, that on the smaller sample, matches one of my former cats perfectly (she is on kitty holiday with my parents, enjoying more cat-wants-in-cat-wants-out freedom). So we've named the counter Susan, in her honour. (Caused some confusion when I called my DH to say that I found a countertop that looked just like Susan - Susan also being the name of his ex....., but I'm off topic). Okay, back to the coutertop decorative item! Here is a link that might be useful: Candied apple red kettle...See MoreYour Guide to 15 Popular Kitchen Countertop Materials
Comments (11)Doh! Thanks for the correction karin_mt. My neighbour is asking for my input on her kitchen. For counters she will probably go with stainless on perimeter and marble on the island. I think that is a terrific combo! Her range/dishwasher/sink will be along the perimeter and her island will be more for looking pretty, light prep work, gathering, and a buffet surface. They don't have children at home any more. In our area (west coast Canada) it looks like stainless is about the same cost as quartz or granite based on her getting multiple quotes....See MoreWhat Material is YOUR counter top?
Comments (58)Pllog, Well, we are in both in CA, as some would say! ;) I do agree with your comment about granite being the standard because of its perception as being a luxury item. FrmrsDghtr, WOW!!! Love what you were able to do!!! RosySunnyGal, Our counters are Floating Blue which is a mostly turquoise in white cement matrix color. We were able to pick our slabs at the factory when it was still here in the Bay Area years ago. We have several KDs in our area that had samples of Vetrazzo, Icestone and Fuez to look over. IF you are looking for the wow factor, these will do it. With that in mind, I do recommend that you really like your countertop color because it is a very prominent part of your kitchen. They also aren't cheap and I highly recommend that your installer be someone who knows how to work with this material. Our installation fabricators claimed they did and we had multiple problems with them that we finally had to hire a second company to fix. We looked at all of the green countertop materials, and this was the one that my DH and I were able to agree on despite the price. BTW, I don't include quartz or C-stone in this category. I do recommend that you do an online search for recycled glass companies because there are several others besides the three I mention above. The ones that I have ran across are: Gilasi in the Chicago area, Urbanslabs in SoCal, Vetrazzo is now in the Atlanta area, and more that I have seen around the US. I do recommend if you can using one that is near you because of the weight and shipping cost of the slabs. If you are interested in knowing more or seeing some pictures of my counters, please, PM me....See Morejemimabean
