What size stakes to attach burlap for winter protection
Comments (9)The difference between me and you is I am NEW to this, and you've been doing this at least a decade. I have no doubt in my mind if I could search posts that 10 years ago you came on and asked lots of questions. It's people like you on message boards, people who've been on a board for years and years that makes newbies feel unwelcome and uncomfortable to ask questions for being shamed by the old timers for either asking too many questions or for asking questions when they should already know the answers. It's a cliche'. I belong to another message board of an entirely different subject, and have belonged there from day one (2004). The board now has almost 200,000k members. To see now, how my fellow posters on there who had joined when I did, they are treating the newbies is really a disgrace. They seem to forget what it was like for them when they were new to the subject. They have no patience, no compassion and no memory of the knowledge they lacked in the area at one time. You're smiley faces don't mask the rudeness of your words. Basically, if you can't be helpful in your response then do everyone a favor and don't respond. In fact, based on some other responses that you have given me in other threads that I have chosen to ignore, I am now asking you to no longer respond to any of my posts....See MoreNewly planted cedars - do I need to wrap this winter?
Comments (1)Hi fillagirl. I'm not expert by any means, but here's what I'd do. First of all, I don't think it's recommended anymore to wrap in burlap. Apparently it dries out the trees. Last year we had a tremendous amount of snow, and my Brandon cedars as well as my Junipers ended up with misshapen branches that had been weighed down all winter with too much snow. I'm going to loosely twine my trees this year to help prevent that. If I had 12 new trees, I'd buy some t-posts and build an inexpensive burlap wall to protect from the wind and snow for the first year. It's also very important at this time of year to make sure you've watered those trees really well. Hope this helps. One of the tree experts here may have different or better advice for you =:)...See MoreWill Burlap Wrapping Help in Zone 7 w/ Bud Hardiness on Tellers?
Comments (5)We get similar warm spells up here including late frosts and even some late snow - eg., we had snow ~April 6/7 in 2003 & 2004. I think the one main difference between our areas other than the higher heat zone that you have, is that despite the warm spells, the ocean influence that inpacts us here in the coastal mid-atlantic tends to keep the average spring temps cooler over the long run and that helps to slow down budswell, even during warm spells. However I think that if you have a vigorous shrub, then even with the late frosts and freezes, that hydrangea can still get a good amount of bloom that will easily compensate for the loss of the more exposed flower buds during a frost. I think your planting site up against the foundation will make a big difference. Good luck as those are some pretty cultivars!!...See Morewhich juniper does not need to be wrapped in winter?
Comments (2)I wouldn't expect the 'Skyrocket' to split. Columnar common juniper forms I wouldn't count on to stay together without help. Note that 'Skyrocket' is actually a Rocky Mountain juniper (J. scopulorum) cultivar....See Morefiguringitout
