Where can I buy garlic bulbs this time of year?
Comments (8)The farmer's market here in Duluth had several different home grown varieties. I bought 4 different bulbs and separated them and planted about 32 cloves. Nice cuz I didn't have to buy 1/2 pound of one variety or pay shipping. Just hope they grow....See MoreDoes anyone else feel like they 'give up' this time of year?
Comments (21)Yes, Ginny, that's a good point. My DH keeps suggesting that I get a greenhouse so I can "garden all year" - and I keep saying No way! My fall gardening season is coming to an abrupt halt after tomorrow, as I'm leaving for a 5-week trip on Saturday. There are lots of volunteer tomatoes about to ripen, the crape myrtle has just started to really bloom fully, the huge Salvia leucanthemum is peaking, and most of the old mums have not really started showing color but are full of buds. The Franklinia altamaha is looking perfect ... at least a couple of them (I have 5, I think) are loaded with flowers and buds. My newly planted border still needs constant attention to keep ahead of the weeds and volunteers and to add mulch here and there and check the soil moisture, and the newer trees and shrubs need to be checked every few days to be sure they're getting their water etc needs met. When I get home, it will all be frosty and brown. DH is not going to be able to keep track of anything, and I'm just hoping we start getting some regular rain, soon. It will be spring before I know what survives this kind of neglect. So, if you can keep gardening this month, count your blessings, and enjoy these last few weeks of the season. It's going to be a long winter!...See MoreWhat do you plan to try for the first time next year?
Comments (29)Hi there tomato growing friends! My list for 2015 is still in the works. I'm checking out what has already been posted. Some varieties I'm familiar with. Others I am not. I grow tomatoes from seed as a hobby. I wish I could do it year round but the weather/climate never cooperates. I try and select my varieties based on it's history. For example for 2015 I hope to germinate and grow the "Purple Calabash". Why? Well it happened to be Thomas Jefferson's favorite. He grew it on his farm in Monticello from 1806 to 1822. This past year I grew Livingston's Paragon which was the 1st tomato introduced to the public and commercial growers here in America back in 1870. It took him 20 years to perfect it. Ok it would be great if when you are adding your list for 2015 you could indicate why you chose a certain variety. It might be impossible to do it for all but even if you just picked out the one that interests you the most. I think by doing this it would add to the joy that this thread has created....See MoreWhat do you put in your apothecary jars this time of year?
Comments (20)I'm very glad you started this thread. A few months ago there was another apothecary jar thread that made me wish I had some! I put them on my Christmas list and my daughter gave me these two beautiful jars already decked out for Christmas. She put pine cones and berries in one and greenery with big brass bells in the other. I plan to leave them like this probably through mid February but I'm already trying to come up with thoughts for what they can hold during spring/summer months. They are beautiful empty but it's such a fun way to change things up and bring in color also. I hope lots more of you will share your pictures and ideas. I'm taking notes!...See Moreprairiemoon2 z6b MA
