Comments (6)Holiday cacti are technically cactus, they're just not desert cactus. I like to have mine in a looser mix than just regular potting soil--quite a bit of bark and perlite. I wanted to start over with some of mine and have rooted four sets of three cuttings since winter and they're growing like mad in that soil mix. Most of them are two segments each, but some were just one and a couple were three. I don't know if the number of segments makes a difference, but I've heard from unreliable sources that they shouldn't have a lot of branching off the segment that will be rooted. I would ask for multiple cuttings like Rob wrote and take socks' advice. I generally rotted 1 out of 4 cuttings because they were a little too wet too soon (I'm guessing), having watered them lightly right away, even though in a very porous mix. It was also rather cool where they were. So I had four segments from each plant and ended up with three of each, which will eventually make for a decent sized 'plant' after they grow and ramify....See MoreHoliday cactus and sunlight.
Comments (24)Rob, wow, your cutting is coloring up so nicely depsite this dismal cloudy weather which seems to be more persistent than sunny days. Mines get full sun and does just fine. As Stush says though, the Madam Butterfly does not get full sun becasue it does burn. That is the only one I give part sun. Remember, the sun we get is much less intense than further west and south of us.The more sun,. the more color on mine. Some of mine share the same pots with other plants too) Great job...See MoreHow are your Holiday Cactus doing so far? Summer update 2019
Comments (16)Lovely thread folks, some really stunning stuff, like the opening shot, soooo dramatic! Tropic, that white EC is so nice. Josh, yours just keeps on trucking huh, I remember it from back then. I may have to christen it Behemoth Jr, ;>) Well Mike, Once again, I seem to do something a bit different. Accidentally discovered these guys like Hydro, They're doing much better for me this way than in mix. Small & young, but growing vigorously w/ lots of new growth. I had shown this recently on a thread of mine called "Finally Thriving CC" that folks seem to have missed. Another slightly larger setup. Who knew?...See Morerina_Ontario,Canada 5a
