Flooring Design Dilemma

Has anyone used engineered stone look Tile in famiy room floor?

Researching engineered stone look tile for family room flooring. I have red OAK hardwood everywhever else on this floor. I don't want to go thru sanding to match, and real tile would be too cold in the winter. Also consider two dogs who hang in family room most and have pee incidents. Which is most realistic Looking and doesn't look like cheap laminate? Anyone have experience with ALTERNA, or other?

I'm assuming you mean stone-look vinyl products or are you thinking the 'faux stone' look that people use around a fireplace?

When it comes to 'living' spaces, stone and tile look a bit odd when the rest of the house has hardwood. Remember that stone and tile (in cold climates) are reserved for bathrooms, kitchens, entranceways and mud rooms. Why? Because they can take quite a bit of water whereas wood and carpet cannot.

So remember the 'look' you are creating if you are putting 'stone' in a living space where most people would EXPECT a warm floor (like wood or carpet). It is a weird concept for many people. It's like carpet in a bathroom (the Brits are famous for this BTW and it looks REALLY WEIRD to a N. American homeowner).

If you are desperate for something 'other than wood', then there are a few other things out there for you. Stone-look and tile look are options. Then there is cork. A cork glue down floor (finished with polyurethane after installation) is water proof. A cork floating floor (click together) can be made water (and pet) resistant when finished with a polyurethane coating after installation.

If resale is not a big deal (because you KNOW you will switch out the family room flooring for hardwood when you list) then go ahead with a sheet vinyl. Yes....sheet. Sheet products (such as real linoleum and vinyl) are the only water proof products worth looking at. Anything that clicks together (like vinyl plank) will hold the urine between the planks thereby holding the smell.

If you want to go with the look of stone, brick or tile but do not WANT the real stuff, you might want to consider sheet vinyl for urine prone pups.

Sheet vinyl is the best choice for your situation. Armstrong offers "ultra low-shine" in the look of stone.

T&G prefinished flooring isn't usually available in long lengths. That means there'll be seams at the ends of the boards making it look like a floor on the ceiling. Paint grade t&g, usually bead board, is often available in 12' and 16' lengths eliminating or at least reducing the number of end seams. It might be possible to get flooring in long lengths but it'll be expensive.

My experience with Nuvelle interlock hardwood flooring is NOTHING but dissappointing. Installed the floor 2 years ago as a floating floor and it has moved away from the walls leaving about on inch gap from two of the edges and wherever there were knots in the plank the wood has split... the interlocking mechanism is failing in many areas . The inspector said it was installation error but where they say was installation error we are not having problems! It’s the incredible shrinking floor going on 2 years now and still shrinking... $6000 Down the drain. Bought from Home Depot by sun crest supply and all have used the inaccurate floor inspector report which was written a month after he inspected the floor and called to ask me questions because he couldn’t remember the inspection ! I have copies of many customers who bought the same type of floor and are having the same issues I am but Home Depot and Suncrest supply took our money and ran... no resolution for us ... saving for a new floor in the future. Be wary of the interlocking floating floor! The design is not working in our house in Colorado!

If you are going to drop stuff on a wood floor and expect it not to dent, you should either get a harder wood, a textured wood that doesn't show dents as readily, or get something that's not wood. If you're getting a wood floor and expect it not to scratch, get something else. I've been doing Mirage for maybe 15 years and have no problems with the quality of their products. My major complaints would be that long ago they had quite a lot of short boards and their smooth products are so smooth that the look a bit fake and show dents and scratches more readily.

My biggest concern is the total thickness (5/8" is thinner than 3/4" gold standard for solid hardwood). My second concern is the thickness of the wear layer...what is it???? Shaw is notorious for not mentioning these things. And the third concern is the wire brush finish. Do you have a sample that you can measure to figure out the top layer thickness. This will tell you if you are purchasing quality vs. a name with a 'look'. For an engineered wood floor that comes in at $12+/sf I would expect to see 4mm - 6mm wear layer (top wood layer). The width of these planks requires full glue spread install. That gets expensive. It will require an extra $1-$2/sf for labour + material (glue). Please DOWN LOAD and READ the installation instructions I'm including below: PDMS - PDMSViewDetails (shawinc.com) There are big warnings in the instructions which clearly point out what they cover and won't cover. This is normal...but Shaw has gone to the extremes (8 pages of SMALL PRINT instructions). They spell out the NWFA Wood Flooring Installation Best Practices. This tells me they have had PLENTY of 'builder/installer' issues in the past and they are sick and tired of taking all the blame. The requirements 'look' strict but they are in fact part of the NWFA (and Canadian Wood Flooring Association) Installation Hand book. The book, if you want to purchase it in Canada = $750! Right...so Shaw is covering it's collective butt in the VERY DETAILED installation instructions. The reason why I tell you to PRINT IT OUT and READ IT is you will need to PASS IT ON to the builder/installer SEVERAL WEEKS before the wood ARRIVES. I would print two copies. One for myself and one for the builder/contractor/installer. I would give one copy to the builder - with date and personal signature on the front page on both copies. This is to cover your own bottom line. If you have issues with the floor look to the INSTALLER first. This is normal but some homeowners blame the product first....which is not the right way to do it. Remember: 95% of flooring issues come from the HUMAN who installed it. Human error. The other 5% (or less) come down to the manufacturer.

Thanks for advice. Strange that the sales person was pushing the cortec type pieces; saying it will be very pet friendly. (I would assume urine would get in those cracks too)
